An 8-year-old homeschooled British boy who reportedly is the best under-10 chess player in the UK is at risk of being forced back to government school – but his parents are determined to keep educating him at home.
Peter Williams' parents tell WND they removed him from public school and began homeschooling him so he'd have more time to practice chess. Peter's father says he has won some adult chess tournaments and thrives on the game.
The British Chess Federation notes Peter, his father and grandfather all share the same name and all play competitive chess, but it is the youngest Williams whom opponents "fear."

Permite tecnología el surgimiento de ‘‘niños genio’’ en el ajedrez

El uso de la tecnología ha permitido a los ajedrecistas alcanzar niveles más altos en menor tiempo, lo que ha provocado el surgimiento de Grandes Maestros en edades tempranas, aseguró el árbitro internacional de la FIDE, Serafín Chuit Pérez.
En entrevista en esta ciudad donde asistió al recién concluido torneo Carlos Torre Repetto, agregó que se ha vuelto algo común el hecho de ver al tablero electrónico en una computadora, lo cual pone a la mano información para quien busca aprender más de esta disciplina.
Señaló que hace 30 o 40 años era inimaginable la aplicación de una máquina para tener acceso a gran variedad de información sobre el ajedrez, lo que trajo beneficios directos como el aprendizaje más rápido del deporte ciencia.

El más joven Gran Maestro en la historia del ajedrez en Cuba

El Gran Maestro Lázaro Bruzón Batista, actual segundo hombre de Cuba en relación con su ELO de 2637, aprendió a jugar ajedrez en la ciudad de Las Tunas, a la que se mudó su familia en 1988, procedente de Holguín, donde había nacido seis años atrás, el 2 de mayo de 1982. Sus padres son Alfredo Bruzón Ochoa y Emilia Batista Mastrapa.
Radicado en el reparto Aeropuerto de la capital tunera, recibió las primeras nociones del Juego Ciencia junto a su hermana mayor, Virgen, de parte de un vecino llamado Reynaldo Milanés Peña, quien le inculcó el amor por el mundo de los trebejos.

Karjakin and Kusubov sparkle

Two young grandmasters from Ukraine, both 14 years old, are giving their elders a run for their money in two major chess tournaments on the European circuit.
In Pamplona, Spain, Sergey Karjakin, who became the world’s youngest person ever to become a GM, at the age of 12 two years ago, has been unbeaten and stayed a close second with 3.5 points to former world title candidate Boris Gelfand of Israel, who had 4.0, after five rounds.
In Groningen, the Netherlands, Yuriy Kusubov was in a tie for first to third places with 6.0 points after seven rounds. The two others having the same score were erstwhile solo leader Dutch GM John van der Wiel and International Master Yge Visser.

Kasparov heading for Norway

The world's best chess player, Garry Kasparov, will travel to Norway in the New Year, to take part in a documentary featuring a young Norwegian chess star.

Kasparov will be picked up at Oslo's main airport at Gardermoen in a limousine on January 3. He and his fiancée will be driven to Oslo's Grand Hotel, where they'll be put up in the hotel's so-called "tower suite."

Boris Gelfand se proclama campeón del Torneo Internacional de Pamplona/Iruña

El Gran Maestro israelí Boris Gelfand se proclamó campeón del Torneo Internacional Ciudad de Pamplona/Iruña de ajedrez al mantener su dominio en la última jornada.
A Gelfand, que tras la penúltima jornada concluida anoche era virtual campeón del torneo, ya que únicamente una carambola podía hacer peligrar el título, le bastó con hacer tablas esta tarde ante Rafael Vaganian para imponerse el torneo navideño pamplonés.

Ajedrez: Uzbeko Kasimdzhanov sustituye al ruso Kramnik

El uzbeko Rustam Kasimdzhanov sustituirá en la nueva edición de Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares al ruso Vladimir Kramnik, que no participará al alegar motivos personales.

Cidade: Xadrez na sala de aula

Lançado este mês pelo Ministério da Educação (MEC) como uma novidade para o ano letivo de 2005, o projeto Xadrez nas Escolas pretende levar o jogo de tabuleiro para as salas de aulas brasileiras como forma de estimular o raciocínio e melhorar o rendimento escolar. Ex-chess champ Fischer asks to go to Iceland

TOKYO (Reuters) - Fugitive chess master Bobby Fischer, who is fighting deportation to the United States, has asked Japan to allow him to go to Iceland, which has offered him a home.
Fischer's spirits are high since Iceland last week extended a residency permit to the former world chess champion, who has been detainted by Japanese immigration authorities for almost half a year, his lawyer said on Friday.

Ciudad israelí se convierte en potencia del ajedrez

BERSHEBA, Israel - Sorpresivamente, la ciudad con mayor cantidad de grandes maestros de ajedrez del mundo per cápita es Bersheba.
Mejor conocida como un oasis bíblico o, posteriormente, como un lugar atrasado en el desierto, Bersheba está cambiando su imagen de ciudad de camellos y conjuntos habitacionales de mal aspecto por las torres y reyes del tablero de ajedrez.
"Tenemos un gran maestro por cada 20.000 habitantes", dijo Eliyahu Levant, fundador del club de ajedrez de Bersheba, refiriéndose a sus ocho miembros que han alcanzado el mayor grado que se otorga en este juego.
En realidad hay un gran maestro por cada 22.875 habitantes en esta ciudad de 183.000. Eso sigue siendo impresionante, en comparación con centros tradicionalmente ajedrecistas en Rusia, como Moscú, donde hay un gran maestro por cada 170.000 personas, o San Petersburgo, con uno por cada 215.000, según cifras de la Federación Rusa de Ajedrez.

Iran wins West Asian chess title

Iran was crowned at the West Asian men's and women's chess events in Beirut on Tuesday. Iranian grand master Ehsan Qaem-Maqami beat Jassem Saleh from the United Arab Emirates, a FIDE master, in the last round, standing top on 5.5 points.
Atoussa Pourkashian, who represented Iran in women's challenges, overcame her Lebanese rival, Maya, to celebrate the title with an asset of 8.5 points.

Para el Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez “GM Carlos Torre Repetto In Memoriam” soplan vientos de cambio. Apenas se hacían los últimos movimientos de la edición 17 del prestigioso evento yucateco, y los organizadores ya planeaban el siguiente.
“Habrá cambios, de eso estamos seguros”, dijo Jorge Esquivel León, integrante del comité organizador del evento.
La primera decisión es que se cambiará el ritmo de juego y ahora todo el evento se jugará bajo el sistema de la FIDE (siglas en francés de Federación Internacional de Ajedrez). “Ya no habrá partidas de seis horas, sino de cuatro, con el ritmo que establece la FIDE”, dijo Esquivel.

Evento de xadrez muda rotina de supermercado

A 9ª etapa do Circuito Catarinense de Xadrez Rápido mudou a rotina de um dos maiores supermercados de Joinville no último final de semana. Cerca de 200 enxadristas entre crianças e adultos de todo o Estado revezaram-se nas mesas montadas entre as gôndolas de mercadoria e área de circulação. O objetivo, segundo os organizadores, foi promover a integração entre os enxadristas e o público em geral, difundindo o esporte, que está relacionado ao conhecimento de lógica, estratégia e matemática. "Quesitos em que as donas- de-casa, maioria num supermercado, dominam bem", argumentou o coordenador de xadrez da Fundação Municipal de Esportes de Joinville, Haroldo Cunha dos Santos Júnior.

Torre, Paragua eye world chess seats

ASIA'S First Grandmaster Eugene Torre and GM-candidate Mark Paragua will compete in the Asian Continental Individual Chess Championship from Jan. 14 to 23 next year at the Hotel Riviera Suites in Kerala, India.
The Fide 11-round Swiss system tournament offers 13 slots for the World Chess Championships where Torre and Paragua are hoping to earn return tickets.
Torre and Paragua narrowly missed qualifying in the last edition of the Asian Continental, dropping their final round assignments against FM Hameed Mansour Ali Kadhi of Yemen and GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly of India, respectively. Those setbacks yanked them out of the top 10 who all advanced to the world championships.

Endorsement of electronic chess clocks, message from the Chairman of the Technical Commission, Mr. Werner Stubenvoll

The FIDE Technical Commission in its meeting during the Congress of Calvia, Mallorca, dealt with three applications for FIDE endorsement of the following electronic chess clocks.

1) Chess timer “Silver” from Germany
The clock functions well when used in "Fischer mode."
During testing in Calvia it was found that in the mode for classical chess – 40 moves in 2 hours, 20 moves in 1 hour and then 30 minutes to finish the game – the flag sign is shown only if one of the players oversteps the time limit. Therefore the chess timer “Silver” was not endorsed by FIDE and the producers were asked to update the software. Fide awaits a new application for endorsement through the new endorsement procedures.

2) Chess clock “LISA” from Czech Republic.
There was only a report from one tournament observed by the chairman of FIDE Technical Commission. Therefore the producers were asked to submit some more units of the clock and to have more investigations by several International Arbiters. Fide awaits a new application for endorsement through the new endorsement procedures.

3) Chess clock "Phileon".
FIDE Technical Commission rejected the application for endorsement.
The main reasons were:
Flag fall in Fischer mode: if the stop button is not pressed, the clocks keep running.
30 seconds increment is only added when the opponent starts the clock.
Time corrections are very complicated.

Ngoc Troungson Nguyen, aged 14 and rated 2527, has gained his third and final GM norm at the First Saturday tournament in Budapest. Iceland will not withdraw permit for chess legend

Reykjavik -- Iceland's offer to grant U.S. chess legend Bobby Fischer a residency permit will not be withdrawn despite pressure from the United States to do so, the Icelandic government said yesterday.

Ivanchuk wins Mexican chess tournament after Graf loses pawn in second game

Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk won the Carlos Torre Repetto chess tournament Monday after defeating German Grand Master Alexander Graf in both of the last two games of their final match.
Graf, playing with the white pieces, lost a pawn in the opening of the second game, handing the victory to Ivanchuk after 31 moves. Ivanchuk, ranked 14 in the International Chess Federation, or FIDE as it is known by its French initials, took advantage of his adversary's misstep and forced him to surrender by threatening to advance a free pawn to the eighth row.

El ciutat de Barcelona llenó de Ajedrez las Cotxeres de Sants durante todo el fin de semana. Si el sábado casi 300 jugadores y jugadoras participaron en las 4 categorías de edades, el domingo 221 lucharon por los trofeos del Internacional.
La victoria final fue para el GM búlgaro Iván Cheparinov que después de ganar en Elgoibar realizó unos excelentes 9 de 10 para llevarse el anfora de los vencedores. Gran actuación de los MI José Gonzalez de Mejico, reciente fichaje del Ateneu Colón y del especialista en ritmos rápidos Miguel Muñoz que la próxima temporada defenderá el primer tablero del Sitges.

Chess: Ganguly retains National 'A' title

Visakhapatnam, Dec. 18 (PTI): Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly of Petroleum Sports Promotion Board edged out teammate Sandipan Chanda yet again to defend his title in the 42nd National 'A' chess championship here at Waltair club.
At the end of the 19th and final round of this marathon event both Ganguly and Chanda scored an identical 12 points and eventually the tiebreaker of Ganguly proved superior under the 'Koya System'.

Does Venkatesh's death make a difference?:

[India News]: New Delhi, Dec 19 : K Venkatesh, a 25-year-old patient suffering from an incurable disease, muscular dystrophy, took his last breath on December 17, but his death has compelled legal luminaries to give a second thought to the issue of euthanasia.
The former chess champion had expressed his wish to donate his organs in a non-heart beating condition, but the Andhra Pradesh High Court dismissed the petition saying that under the Organ Transplantation Act only brain dead or natural death allows for donation of organs.
He appealed one more time, arguing that his organs would deteriorate if he were not allowed to commit euthanasia. The court set up a team to conduct a detailed study on Venkatesh's condition, but it forgot that death can't wait. Venakatesh died, with his wish unfulfilled, but his death raised many questions, which are yet to be answered.

YEREVAN, December 18 (RIA Novosti's Gamlet Matevosyan) - Yerevan, Armenian capital, is hosting the world's first international online chess tournament.
Dedicated to the 75th birth anniversary of Tigran Petrosyan, 9th world chess champion, the event opened today to last into Thursday, December 23.
To make Armenia a known presence not in chess alone but in other fields is the main tournament goal, say spokesmen for the Armenian Chess Academy Director.

Lautier - Il faut remarquer que si l'on ne voit pas l'adversaire physiquement, nous avons tout de même des indications, notamment en regardant le temps utilisé sur un coup. Bauer- Je suis plus habitué à jouer des parties rapides sur Internet. Cela dit, cette formule permet de réaliser des économies conséquentes, et devrait connaître un développement important ces prochaines années.
Nataf- Il faut juste s'assurer de la présence d'un arbitre de bon niveau, afin d'éviter toute triche potentielle que permet le jeu par Internet. Le seul souci est d'ordre technique, en cas de panne informatique : c'est ce qui s'était produit lors du premier match organisé sur Internet, un match France-Usa qui avait dû être interrompu à cause d'un ouragan qui a privé une partie de l'Arizona d'électricité !

Días atrás se estrenó en Nueva York un documental que revive un episodio decisivo en la historia del ajedrez y la inteligencia artificial. El hecho supo generar cierta controversia en 1997, cuando sucedió, y nunca quedó cerrado. Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine (Final de juego: Kasparov y la máquina) indaga en los sucesos e hipótesis que rodearon la derrota del campeón mundial ante Deep Blue, la supercomputadora de IBM. Vence Ivanchuk a Nogueiras en internacional de ajedrez

Mérida (Yucatán), México, 18 dic (AIN) El Gran Maestro (GM) ucraniano Vassily Ivanchuk venció aquí al GM cubano Jesús Nogueiras (de Villa Clara) en la partida más esperada de la jornada inicial de la etapa final del XVII Carlos Torre Repetto de Ajedrez.

Euthanasia seeker dies in India

A terminally-ill Indian chess champion who has been the focus of a euthanasia debate, has died in hospital.
Venkatesh, 25, was suffering from a genetic neurological disorder and was on life-support.
On Wednesday, a court rejected his plea to have his life support system turned off so that he could donate his organs before they were irreparably damaged.
Euthanasia is outlawed in India and organ donation may only take place if the donor is declared brain dead.

Film Review: 'Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine'

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - A chess game between a famous grand master and a highly sophisticated computer takes on the air of a classic paranoid thriller in the documentary "Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine" (ThinkFilm).
Director Vikram Jayanti's chronicle of the famous 1997 match between Russian chess legend Garry Kasparov and the IBM computer Deep Blue resonates with numerous subtexts.
Kasparov lost to Deep Blue in a match that was heralded as the ultimate contest between man and machine. But the cantankerous chess player didn't go quietly, alleging duplicity and cheating on the part of IBM. Citing the dramatic difference in style evidenced by the machine between the first and second days, he accused its scientists of tinkering with the machine during the match, and possibly even providing human assistance. The company, which dismantled the computer immediately after the match and refused to provide diagrams of its workings for Kasparov's perusal, certainly had motivation, since its stock value rose about $2 billion immediately after the victory.

AT what point, really, does one start winning a game of chess?
I have said that we begin play either with any of the eight Pawns or with any one of the Knights.
Now, as we move our Pawns forward, we invariably and inevitably create weaknesses.
How? Well, the Pawn, it will be remembered, is not allowed to move backwards. It therefore follows that, whenever it marches ahead, the Pawn leaves a hole on the square from which it is moving — a gap it can never close again.
Ironically, these weaknesses can also be a source of strength.
How? Because they are the channels through which our Queen, Bishops and Rooks and Knights will travel on our journey to checkmate our opponent.

Islandia concede el permiso de residencia a Bobby Fischer

Fischer está tratando de renunciar a la nacionalidad estadounidense, bien sea a través de la boda con una japonesa o bien consiguiendo un pasaporte alemán, aduciendo que su padre legal era de esta nacionalidad.

Islandia ha concedido un permiso de residencia al ex Campeón del Mundo de Ajedrez Bobby Fischer, retenido hace cinco meses por las autoridades japonesas de inmigración, según confirmó hoy la embajada islandesa en Tokio.
Sobre Fischer pesa una orden de detención de Estados Unidos por violar un embargo económico que pesaba sobre Yugoslavia y una orden de deportación de Japón, que está siendo examinada en los tribunales nipones tras varias apelaciones de los abogados del ajedrecista.
"El permiso de residencia fue aprobado según figura en un comunicado del Ministerio de Exteriores, por lo que un miembro de la Embajada se lo entregará personalmente" a Fischer – aunque no se precisó cuándo se produciría la entrega.

Meenakshi wins silver in Asian women's chess

Hikaru Nakamura volvió a imponerse al ucraniano Serguei Kariakin, ayer por la tarde, en las instalaciones de la Universidad, al jugarse la quinta partida del duelo por la supremacía de jóvenes prodigio, en un duelo en el que como los anteriores, fue agresivo y prácticamente quedó el tablero vacío.

MOSCOW. Dec 13 (Interfax) - The match for the men's world chess title between Garri Kasparov (Russia) and Rustam Kasymjanov (Uzbekistan) may be held in the first half of 2005 in Turkey, President of FIDE chess federation Kirsan Ilyumzhinov told Interfax on Monday.
"Initially the match was expected to be held in the United Arab Emirates at the beginning of January, but the organizers have failed to get everything ready by that time," he said.

Nakamura seems cut out for the job. On Monday, in San Diego, he won the U.S. chess championship. He's 16 years old and likes to relax before his matches by listening to rock. What kind? "Loud and noisy," he told an interviewer on NPR. And on the radio he, like, talks like a teenager.
Chess does not deserve whatever notions people have about it. Sure, it requires brains. Yes, it takes years of practice and study to become reasonably good. And, granted, it is played sitting down. But it is not without physical requirements.

Nacido el 4 de noviembre de 1989, Axel es el tercero de cuatro hermanos y es el más joven campeón nacional de la historia del ajedrez paraguayo.
Axel Bachmann con solo 14 años se convirtió en el niño prodigio del ajedrez, al ganar este año el certamen mayor en medio de grandes maestros nacionales. Sorprendió a todos, nadie esperaba que a tan temprana edad él se consagrara como el mejor entre los maestros paraguayos.
Axel estuvo de visita en la redacción de Última Hora y nos contó sobre lo que significa en su vida el ajedrez, su pasión por la franja negra del Olimpia, el tenis y sus expectativas para el futuro.
¿A qué edad comenzaste a jugar al ajedrez?
A los cuatro años mi padre me enseñó a jugar, me llevó al Club Área 1 de Ciudad del Este y al año siguiente ya comencé a jugar torneos, a veces con buenos resultados, otras con malos, pero siempre con el apoyo incondicional de mis padres. Recuerdo que el profesor cubano Luis Valdez y el ingeniero Julio Ingolotti me enseñaron los primeros pasos en este lindo deporte

BEERSHEBA, Israel -- Beersheba is a city of humble origins. Once known as a biblical oasis, it became in its later incarnation a desert backwater.
But one man's vision has helped turn it into the city with the most chess grandmasters per capita in the world.
"For every 20,000 inhabitants we have a grandmaster," said Beersheba chess club founder Eliyahu Levant, referring to the eight members of his club who have achieved chess's highest ranking.
Actually it's a ratio of one grandmaster per 22,875 residents in this city of 183,000. That's still impressive compared with traditional chess centers in Russia, like Moscow with one grandmaster out of every 170,000 people, or St. Petersburg with one per 215,000, according to Russian Chess Federation figures.

JUST as well I did not give you that Fischer game last time. Because this week I want to talk about the relative value of the different chess pieces.

But what has that got to do with Robert James Fischer? Well, most of Fischer’s games provide lessons on what the values of the different pieces do not mean.
Once too often I have noticed that players tend to let the value of the individual pieces determine their play. One sees some kind of dull, protective play that is devoid of any creativity.
Now, this should not necessarily be so — because the object of chess is not to emerge with superior material points, but to checkmate your opponent.

Alexander Delchev, de la federación búlgara, se alzó con el primer puesto del X Torneo internacional de ajedrez Villa de Navalmoral, obteniendo ocho puntos de los nueve posibles fruto de siete victorias y dos tablas. Delchev, que era el favorito, se embolsó los 3.000 euros con los que estaba dotada la primera plaza.
En segundo puesto quedó Alexsa Strikovic, de Servia, con siete puntos y 2.000 euros de premio. El chileno Daniel Barria fue el tercero, con siete puntos también y 1.000 euros. Oleg Korneev y Vladimir Epishin, ambos de le federación rusa, consiguieron la cuarta plaza y quinta plaza respectivamente, llevándose por ello 800 euros el primero y 700 el segundo.

NEW YORK , New York, United States of America -- A teenager from New York State, who just became the youngest US national chess champion since Bobby Fischer in 1958, says he is "more sane" than his troubled predecessor.
Hikaru Nakamura, a 16-year-old grandmaster, took the national title in San Diego on Monday, beating out Alex Stripunsky, 34, in two overtime matches.
Fischer, rated one of the greatest ever tournament chess players, was 14 when he won the same title nearly 50 years ago.
Nakamura had already beaten one Fischer milestone last year, when he became an American grandmaster at 15, eclipsing Fischer by a few months.

A dozen or more youngsters are hunched over black and white chess boards and tournament-size chess pieces.
''Yes! I've captured both your bishops!'' a player exclaims.
''I want the crystal queen next!'' another shouts.
Max Kortenbach peers at the board and then makes his move. ''Check!'' he says gleefully, outstretched hands pumping in the air.
It is Friday night, the Chess-Mates are in session and Max is clearly delighted in the club that he started.
With good reason. The 8-year-old who is struggling with autism and a speech impediment began to play chess just months ago.

Stripunsky and Nakamura tied for first on points and will play a two-game rapid playoff match Sunday. If that is tied there will be a sudden-death blitz game to decide first prize.
Six players finished with six points. Prizes 3-5 are decided by tiebreak points. So Kaidanov wins third prize, Kudrin wins fourth prize, Shulman wins fifth prize. All other prizes are aggregated and divided evenly among the point group.
In the women's championship, Goletiani and Abrahamyan tied for first with 4.5 and will play a rapid playoff match Sunday. If that is tied there will be a sudden-death blitz game to decide first prize. Krush and Battsetseg tied on points at 4.0, but the first three prizes are decided by tiebreak (or playoff) so Krush wins third prize and Battsetseg, as the only other player with 4.0, wins fourth prize.

Selon un communiqué publié sur le site de la FIDE, l'organisation, initialement prévue à Dubaï, n'aurait pas fourni les garanties nécessaires.
Un nouveau délai, jusqu'au 05 décembre, lui est a été accordé à sa demande pour apporter les éléments nécessaires.
Garry Kasparov avait mis en cause la FIDE et lui avait enjoint par lettre d'apporter des garanties au début du mois de Novembre. Il avait également tenté de promouvoir une candidature turque à l'organisation.
Le match Kasparov - Kasimdzhanov, censé être une étape du proccessus de réunifaction du titre de Champion du Monde après le match de Brissago ayant vu la victoire de Kramnik sur Leko, aura t-il lieu, et si oui, quand et où?
Il n'est pas certain que la réponse soit apportée au terme de l'ultimatum fixé par la FIDE. Cette institution a depuis des années prouvé son inefficacité, et ses multiples errements semblent rendre vain tout espoir de solution.

IN CASE you’ve not heard, Malaysia has just gained her latest Woman International Master, but no prizes for guessing correctly that she is none other than six-time women’s national champion Siti Zulaikha Foudzi.
Siti accomplished this feat at the recently-concluded World girls’ chess championships in Cochin, India, finishing with 7½ points from 13 games. It was just after nine games that she earned her third woman international master norm.
According to the website of the tournament, Siti drew her ninth game with the white pieces against India’s Raghavi in just five moves.
“It is a special day for me. I messaged my father, a doctor in Kuala Lumpur (to tell him the good news),” Siti told the website.

Aug. 12 In an elaborate palace, more than 1,300 years ago, members of an elite Roman family may have played some of the earliest chess games in Europe.
While excavating the bottom floor of an A.D. 465-era palace in Butrint, Albania, archaeologists unearthed what they believe is the oldest chess piece ever found. If their hunches are right, the find pushes back the time when it's believed chess was brought to Europe by hundreds, perhaps thousands of years, although some chess scholars remain skeptical this is possible.
"This was a most significant find that may well affect our understanding of the history of chess," says John Mitchell, a professor of art, architecture and European culture at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, who participated in the excavation.

But although "Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine" stirs up these heady conflicts, this deflating documentary gives up its quest for answers too easily.
In 1997 the chess legend Garry Kasparov went several rounds against an I.B.M. computer in a much-hyped showdown, and the turning point came in the second game. Suddenly, the computer's moves and countermoves turned radical, aggressive. That strategy was too much like Mr. Kasparov's own furious style, and he conceded defeat in exasperation, not noticing that he had walked away from a chance for at least a draw.

Los GM Pentala Harikrishna (IND) y Ekaterina Korbut (RUS), se proclamaron monarcas masculino y femenino, respectivamente, del Campeonato Mundial Juvenil que finalizó este martes con 108 trebejistas de más de 50 naciones.
Los titulares vencieron una tenaz resistencia hasta la última jornada del martes, pues sus compañeros de liderato, el chino Zhao Jun y Elizabeth Paehtz (GER), perdieron en sus cotejos finales y así se desvanecieron sus sueños dorados.
El medio punto de Harikrishna ante el GM Ferenc Berkes (HUN) y la victoria de Korbut frente a la MF Alina Motoc (RUM), marcaron la diferencia que los convirtió en campeones, con 10 unidades el local y 10.5 la rusa.
Zhao Jun, que sorprendentemente había alcanzado al monarca en la ronda anterior, no encontró una salida victoriosa en su partida con el MI polaco Radoslav Wojtiszek, quien empleó todo su arsenal para ponerle un traspiés que de seguro no olvidará en mucho tiempo.

MADRID (Por Leontxo García, de El País).— Impresiona tanto que ya hay un libro sobre sus primeros 14 años, que cumplió ayer martes. En abril, a los 13, el noruego Magnus Carlsen se convirtió en el gran maestro más joven del mundo, a pesar de que su país no es una potencia en ajedrez. En las últimas semanas ha mostrado su inmenso talento en la Olimpíada de Calviá (Mallorca) y en el Campeonato de España por equipos de Sanxenxo (Pontevedra).
“Es como ganar un Nobel de Química con 13 años”, sostiene Simen Agdestein, el autor del libro “Wonderboy” (El chico maravilla), publicado en inglés, alemán y holandés por la editorial New in Chess. Agdestein, entrenador de Carlsen desde hace cuatro años, es otro noruego muy peculiar: formó parte simultáneamente de las selecciones nacionales de ajedrez y fútbol. Pero lo del Nobel requiere un par de matices: el ajedrez es, junto a la música y las matemáticas, la actividad que produce más niños prodigio; y su precocidad aumenta desde que las computadoras de ajedrez han acelerado muchísimo el aprendizaje. De ahí que la comparación con Mozart parezca más adecuada.

Su meteórico ascenso hacia los más altos niveles de la maestría ajedrecística constituye el pilar principal de su fama.
Sin embargo, quienes convivieron con él, quienes aprendieron de él, quienes tuvieron la oportunidad de tratarlo en toda su dimensión humana, agregan a su fama ajedrecística una serie de cualidades que hicieron de Carlos Torre un ser excepcional.

(PT) Xadrez pode ser estendido em todas escolas do País

A Secretaria de Educação Básica do Ministério da Educação (SEB/MEC) e a Secretaria Nacional de Esporte Educacional do Ministério dos Esportes estão planejando implementar, em parceria com as secretarias de educação e as secretarias de esportes das 27 unidades da Federação, o Projeto Xadrez nas Escolas.

A idéia é levar o ensino do jogo de xadrez como instrumento pedagógico nos projetos da rede oficial de ensino, já para o inicio de 2005, visando à diversificação das atividades e ao desenvolvimento dos alunos.

(EN) KARPOV CONDUCTING CHESS FESTIVAL WITHIN POLAR CIRCLE

TYUMEN, December 1 (RIA Novosti) - The Polar Circle-2004 chess festival for Anatoly Karpov's prize is starting in Salekhard (the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area) on Wednesday.
As many as 13 International Grandmasters whose FIDE rating is in excess of 2,500 will participate in the tournament.
The organisers plan to receive in Salekhard about 100 chess players whose qualification is not below Candidate Master.
The competition will be held in nine rounds on the basis of the Swiss system (1.5 hours for a game plus 30 seconds for a move to each entrant.
