Federation trying to reunify chess world

TBILISI, Georgia -- The World Chess Federation said Sunday it would hold a tournament this year in an attempt to unify the chess world that splintered nearly a decade ago with the world champion's walkout.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the president of the federation known by its French acronym FIDE, said the world's eight top chess grandmasters would play a tournament in October to name the world champion. The planned match is the fifth attempt to reunify the chess world since then-world champion Garry Kasparov broke away from FIDE in 1993.

Linares: Kasparov shoots in to sole lead

World No. 2 Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw by tailender Framcisco Pons Vallejo of Spain in the fifth round of the 22nd Linares Super Grandmasters Chess tournament.
The draw proved costly for the Indian ace as he was relegated to the second spot in the leader board behind Garry Kasparov of Russia who crushed England's Michael Adams.
Kasparov took his tally to 3 points from four games in the category-20 double round-robin event while Anand moved to 2.5 points from as many games.
FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasmidzhanov is in sole third spot right now with 2.5 points from five games while Corus champion Peter Leko of Hungary and Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria are next with 2 points from four games.
After bowing to Kasparov, Adams was pushed to the sixth-spot in the seven-players event with 2 points from five games while Vallejo's draw did not help him improve his tournament standing as the young Spaniard is still at the bottom of the table with 1 point from four games.

Ajedrecista ruso Kasparov intenta mantener su invicto en Linares

Madrid, 28 feb (PL) El ajedrecista ruso Gari Kasparov intentará mantener hoy su invicto en el torneo de Linares, España, cuando enfrente al indio Viswanathan Anand en la sexta jornada del certamen.
La víspera, Kasparov, número uno del mundo, conservó la cima de la justa, tras aventajar al inglés Michael Adams en la quinta fecha.
El ruso necesitó casi seis horas para derrotar a Adams, sexto del universo, en 54 lances de una nimzoindia.
Luego de una ardua lucha, Kasparov aprovechó la ventaja de un peón que tenía en la fase final de la partida para conseguir su segunda victoria de la lid.
Con este triunfo, Kasparov llegó a tres puntos, líder en solitario de la lid, catalogada por los especialistas como el Wimbledon del ajedrez mundial.

Los maestros avanzan firmes en torneo de ajedrez de Linares

Linares.- El gran maestro español, Paco Vallejo, con negras, sufrió su segunda derrota con el inglés Michael Adams en la cuarta ronda del Torneo de Linares que se disputa en esta ciudad.
Vallejo tenía que superar la paliza que le endosó anteriormente el ruso Gari Kasparov, debido sobre todo a sus apuros de tiempo, problema que arrastra el menorquín desde hace muchos años.
El español tuvo el mismo problema con Adams en una partida que había comenzado con la defensa Siciliana. Al llegar al medio juego, se fue cargando de tiempo y cometió imprecisiones que fueron agravando su posición.

AJEDREZ: Bachmann alcanzó norma de maestro internacional

El joven y exitoso cultor de nuestro ajedrez Axel Bachmann, a los quince años, concretó en su tercer intento la primera norma de Maestro Internacional en el torneo Young Boys, celebrado en San Pablo, Brasil, en el que también intervino José Fernando Cubas.
Siete de los nueve rivales que enfrentó jugaron con ELO superior al del paraguayo.
Axel, con ELO 2314, que ocupó la cuarta posición, completó los 5,5 puntos que en las estadísticas que se toman en cuenta para establecer los rankings ELO representan la expectativa de rendimiento de un Gran Maestro Internacional con ELO, 2452 por lo que la Federación Internacional (FIDE) le reconoce la primera norma de tres que precisa para ser Maestro Internacional.

Anand draws with Leko

Viswanathan Anand and Peter Leko, ended their third round clash in quick draw in just 24 moves from Petroff game in the Linares 2005 Super GM Chess Tournament at Hotel Annibal. Anand, the NIIT Brand Ambassador, now has 1.5 points from two games, while Garry Kasparov, who took advantage of Francisco Vallejo Pons suspect play to take a full point, was leading with two points from three games.
Anand's next game is against Rustam Kasimdzhanov and the Indian ace has white pieces. Kasparov will have a rest day in fourth round.

Kasparov lidera torneo magistral de ajedrez

Linares/Hamburgo.- El ruso Gari Kasparov, cuyo mayor empeño es seguir siendo número uno del mundo, se colocó hoy líder del torneo magistral de ajedrez de Linares al derrotar al español Francisco Vallejo en 29 jugadas de un gambito de dama aceptado.
Las otras dos partidas, Leko-Anand y Kasimdzhanov-Adams, terminaron en tablas. Kasparov cuenta con 2,0 puntos, seguido de Anand, Leko y Kasimdzhanov con 1,5 puntos, reseñó DPA.
Kasparov se aprovechó de un fallo garrafal de Vallejo, agobiado por grandes apuros de reloj, forzándolo al abandono en la jugada 29. El español, de 22 años, 18 del ranking mundial y benjamín del torneo, es ahora colista con 0,5 de dos partidas.

The basics of chess etiquette

Chess players are generally expected to know the basics of chess etiquette whenever they take part in a chess tournament or even as a spectator at a chess event. But do they? When they go to a chess tournament, how are they expected to behave?
The first thing to remember is that, with the exception of top-level chess events, most chess activities are held in confined spaces where, many times, one player’s elbows may be practically touching his two immediate neighbours.
Here some of the common inter-related chess etiquette which chess players and spectators are expected to know and follow.
Firstly, when watching a game of chess, keep the noise down. Background ambient noise adds to the tension of a game. The last thing players would want is for someone in the crowd to make audible comments on their games and disturb their concentration. Whispers should be discreet and out of earshot of players.

Cuando el 18 de febrero se daba a conocer la noticia muchos dieron saltos de alegría. Que la Gran Maestra (GM) Sulennis Piña conquistara por primera vez en la historia el título del principal evento del juego ciencia en Cuba justificaba cualquier gozo.
La menuda trebejista, de apenas 24 años, venció en su último duelo a la Maestra Internacional (MI) Acela de Armas, de Villa Clara, y acumuló 8,5 puntos, válidos para agenciarse la corona de la lid.

Ajedrez. Torneo de Linares: Kasparov hizo tablas con Kasimdzhanov y Anand ganó a Topalov

El ruso Gari Kasparov, con blancas, hizo hoy tablas con el uzbeco Rustam Kasimdzhanov, y el indio Viswanathan Anand derrotó al búlgaro Veselin Topalov en partidas correspondientes a la segunda ronda del Torneo de Linares, que se disputa en esta ciudad jienense.
Kasparov, número uno del mundo, y Kasimdzhanov, campeón mundial de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE) disputaron una larguísima partida que comenzó por la defensa rusa o Petrov.
La apertura, hasta el movimiento 15, fue jugada con toda rapidez en una línea que debía ser conocida por los dos jugadores. El uzbeco introdujo una novedad con Ca5 que hizo pensar al ruso.
Después de la apertura, Kasparov quedó algo mejor que su adversario que tenía un peón doblado en el ala de rey. Unas jugadas más tarde, Kasimdzhdanov tuvo que entregar la calidad (torre por caballo o alfil) y quedó inferior.
La partida parecía decidida a favor de Kasparov pero una férrea defensa del uzbeco y el hecho de que el ruso ya no remata como en sus mejores tiempos hizo que se firmaran las tablas después de seis horas de lucha.

Anand vence Topalov no Magistral de Linares

O indiano Viswanathan Anand venceu ontem o búlgaro Vesselin Topalov na segunda jornada do Magistral de xadrez de Linares, Espanha, numa complexa partida em que conseguiu concretizar a pequena vantagem que detinha quando se entrou no final da partida.
Anand, que folgou na primeira ronda, iniciou assim a sua participação da melhor maneira, e apesar de se encontrar em igualdade pontual com Kasparov, Leko, Topalov e Kazimdzhanov, tem menos uma partida disputada.
O inglês Adams, ainda não refeito da derrota com o búlgaro, preferiu repartir o ponto sem grande luta, apenas em 18 lances, frente ao húngaro Peter Leko. Parece que estão longe de serem erradicados os empates rápidos, que os organizadores tanto queriam evitar com uma alteração dos prémios pecuniários.

MUMBAI: The All India Chess Federation (AICF) president N Srinivasan is awaiting the original order of the Madras High Court which restrained the AICF secretary PT Ummer Koya and treasurer Soumen Majumdar from functioning.
The case was filed by the officials of Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Maharashtra chess associations against Koya's alleged illegal activities and financial irregularities.
"I have received a letter from the petitioner's counsel PV Balasubramaniam notifying the court order," said Srinivasan from Chennai on Wednesday. "But I can't react on this issue unless I see it."

I had some reservations about reviewing this game, because the old Atari 2600 version of chess could wipe the floor with me. I know the rules of the game, but I certainly wouldn’t call myself an avid player. Growing up, I was far more interested in those new things called “video games” than anything a checker board could offer. Still, to my surprise, there’s so much wrong with Fritz 8 Deluxe that my playing ability (or lack thereof) didn’t turn out to be an issue.

Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand will be looking to settle a few scores against world number one Garry Kasparov when the two will meet in the Linares Super Grandmasters Chess tournament that gets underway in Linares later on Wednesday.

New International Arbiter and FIDE Arbiter Regulations

The General Assembly of the 75th FIDE Congress in Calvia, Spain, approved the new regulations for obtaining the titles of FIDE Arbiter (FA) and International Arbiter (IA). The new regulations will be valid from July 1st 2005. The most important change in the regulations is that from July 1st 2005 the title of FIDE Arbiter (FA) is required before obtaining the International Arbiter title (IA).

LXXI CAMPEONATO BRASILEIRO ABSOLUTO

El GM Rafael Leitão ha logrado el título de Campeón Brasilero Absoluto por cuarta vez, las otras fueron en las ediciones de 1996, 1997 y 1998, al imponerse por mejor coeficiente de desempate en el LXXI Campeonato Brasilero que se ha celebrado en São José do Rio Preto, Brasil, con motivo del Festival Paulista del Interior.

Sulennis Piña, nueva campeona de Cuba de Ajedrez

La GM Sulennis Piña, de Granma, cumplió su anhelado sueño de ser campeona nacional de ajedrez, tras proclamarse en el recién finalizado torneo mayor del juego ciencia femenino en Cuba, desarrollado en Matanzas, al vencer en la ronda del adiós a la multicampeona villaclareña Acela de Armas.
Sulennis totalizó 8½ puntos de 12 posibles, y superó en una unidad a un quinteto de jugadoras, dentro del que se encontraba la santiaguera Maritza Arribas —la hasta ahora reina del ajedrez cubano—, que cayó en la última fecha ante Milena Campos, de Villa Clara. (...)

Cuando le ponen un tablero enfrente se transforma al punto que sus contrincantes aseguran que pueden sentir su tremenda energía y no se sorprenden por el hecho de que el 13 de abril de 1963 haya habido un fuerte movimiento sísmico en la ciudad de Baku (Azerbayán). Porque ese día y en ese lugar vio la luz el ajedrecista más grande de todos los tiempos: Gary Kasparov.
A partir de hoy estará en acción después de un año en el que se mantuvo algo alejado del tablero. Y lo hará frente a seis de sus mejores colegas, con quienes se estará enfrentando hasta el 10 de marzo en un supertorneo a doble vuelta.

Linares incorpora incentivos para evitar que las tablas proliferen en su torneo

La 22ª edición del torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Ciudad de Linares, que comienza el próximo miércoles, aportará como principal novedad la ausencia de fijos por participación, sustituidos por un sistema de incentivos económicos acordes con la clasificación final. «El torneo se convierte así en pionero y pretende paliar el excesivo número de tablas, así como revolucionar el mundo del deporte ciencia», señaló Juan Fernández, alcalde de Linares.
Con un presupuesto de 415.000 euros, el torneo volverá a reunir a los mejores del mundo, con la única excepción del vigente campeón, o Vladimir Kramnik, que no podrá participar, al parecer, por problemas personales.

It finished Saturday with international master David Shengelia of Georgia and grandmaster Michail Brodsky of Ukraine sharing first place with 7.5 points in nine games.
The Aeroflot Open with nearly 570 players is still underway in Moscow. It is split into several sections; the top group includes players rated 2550 and higher on the FIDE list.

Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran finally managed to score a much awaited victory against GM Tomasz Markowski of Poland in the fourth round of the Aeroflot International Open Chess tournament.
Grandmaster Andrei Kharlov of Russia created the biggest upset of the event defeating second seed and hot favourite Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine.
The Russian thus shot in to sole lead with 4 points in the 'A-1' section that carries a winner's purse of USD 30,000.

El Gran Maestro búlgaro Iván Cheparinov, con 5,5 puntos, tras hacer tablas con el ruso Oleg Korneev (GM) en la sexta jornada, sigue como líder del XI Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez "Villa de Coria del Río".
Cheparinov, que con blancas hizo tablas en 24 jugadas, se perfila como favorito al triunfo, tras haber jugado ya con los principales oponentes como Daniel Cámpora (GM-ARG), Davor Kolmjenovic (GM-CRO) y Korneev.

Why waste time on chess?

In 1996, I created the world's first online chess instructional site at www.totalchess.com.
I stopped writing new lessons a long time ago, but paying members can still access the archives.
One such member offered me an interesting experience. A few weeks after this gentleman joined the site, my bank notified me that the cardholder had requested a refund of the membership fee.
Intrigued, I called the number listed in the registration information. The gentleman who answered told me that it was indeed his credit card, but it wasn't him who signed up - it was his young son.
Since I had him on the line, I thought I would ask what was wrong with his son learning more about chess and becoming a better player.
The response left me speechless: "Why should my son waste any time and money on a game such as chess?"
This incident prompted me to think that maybe it isn't the children who we should "market" chess to, but their parents.

Ivanchuk, Kharlov remain at the helm

World No. 11 Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and Andrei Kharlov of Russia posted their third straight wins to stay at the helm of the 102-player main event of the Aeroflot Chess Festival in Moscow on Thursday (Friday in Manila).
The two leaders remained unbeaten. Ivanchuk crushed Sergey Volkov of Russia while Kharlov thrashed his compatriot, Aleksei Lugovoi. Both winners had White.
Ten others, however, were snapping at their heels entering the fourth round, just half a point behind, led by former world junior champions Vladimir Akopian of Armenia, Emil Sutovsky of Israel and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan.
Mamedyarov, 19, outclassed Olympiad gold medalist Sergey Karjakin, 14, of Ukraine in a duel between two outstanding teenage grandmasters.

Elite del ajedrez mundial disputará gran torneo en Sofía en mayo

Sofía, 18 feb (EFE)- Un torneo de ajedrez de la más alta categoría reunirá en la capital búlgara a las grandes estrellas mundiales de ese deporte el próximo mes de mayo, informa hoy la prensa de este país.
El torneo "MTel Masters", que se disputará del 12 al 22 de mayo en Sofía, será de la categoría 21, que es la más alta del mundo, y se organiza por iniciativa de quien es actualmente el número tres de la clasificación mundial, el gran maestro búlgaro Veselin Topalov.
Han confirmado su participación ya campeones mundiales como Vladimir Kramnik (Rusia), Viswanathan Anand (India) y Ruslán Ponomariov (Ucrania), así como la húngara Judit Polgar que participa únicamente en torneos masculinos.

Lack of sponsors may force Harikrishna to quit chess

P Harikrishna, the world junior chess champion, has said he maybe forced to quit the game for lack of sponsorship.
His four-year-old contract with Wipro ended in December. And the 18-year-old says he does not have the 15 to 20 lakh rupees needed every year.
"I can afford for one or two tournaments, not more than that. If it is going to be more tournaments, it is going to be very difficult,'' said P Harikrishna, junior world chess champion.
Asked if that would mean Harikrishna stops playing chess for lack of a sponsor, he said, "It might go to that extent.''
Travelling to the Bermuda Invitational tournament this month cost Hari one lakh rupees.
What helped him was his victory at the tournament, despite the presence of several players seeded above him.
The prize money fetched him Rs 75,000. Hari says he needs to train with an international coach if he is to improve his ELO rating.

El Gran Maestro búlgaro Iván Cheparinov, se proclamó campeón a falta de una ronda del XI Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez Villa de Coria del Río tras derrotar a su compatriota Jordan Ivanov.
Cheparinov ganó a Ivanov en 31 jornadas con una defensa siciliana y sumó 7,5 puntos, y en segunda posición se situó el GM argentino Daniel Cámpora, con seis puntos, que derrotó al GM ruso Oleg Korneev -vencedor de la competición en las pasadas cuatro ediciones- en 62 jugadas y con apertura irregular.
El cubano Rodney Pérez sacó del tablero en 25 jugadas al alemán Michael Tschrotschkin, el ecuatoriano Carlos Matamoros igualó con el chileno Daniel Barría, y el croata Davor Komljenovic derrotó al ucraniano Alexander Razmyslov en 43 jugadas y apertura de peón de dama.

Duelo de xadrez divide US$ 1,65 mi em prêmios

O russo Garry Kaspárov e o uzbeque Rustam Kasimyánov dividirão US$ 1,65 milhão em prêmios em seu próximo confronto, anunciou nesta terça-feira em Moscou Kirsan Ilyumzhínov, presidente da Federação Internacional de Xadrez (Fide).
Ilyumzhínov informou que um novo fundo de prêmios foi garantido pelo governo da Turquia, país que sediará o torneio que será disputado pelo líder da classificação mundial, Kaspárov, e o atual campeão do mundo pela Fide, Kasimyánov.

National Federations are requested to sunmit applications for the titles of trainers’ award. The year 2005, the 10th anniversary of the Trainers Committee, shall be dedicated towards this aim to certify trainers’ titles. For this purpose, applications will have to be received by May. FIDE Development Commission Chairman Ignatius Leong appeals to all national federations and trainers to participate to help make this developmental project move on with a brighter future.

Ha Noi, Feb 14 (AVN) - El gobierno vietnamita aprobó la iniciativa del Comité Nacional de Educación Física y Deportes y del Comité Popular de Ciudad Ho Chi Minh de acoger la Copa Mundial de Ajedrez-2005, a celebrarse a fines de este año en esta mayor urbe sureña.

Harikrishna keen to join elite chess club

Bermuda, Feb 12: P Harikrishna is still in his teens but having reached the doorstep of the 2700 ELO mark club, he is eager to be among its elite members.
"I would like to reach there as soon as possible. I had set myself 2650 as the first goal after winning the World Juniors. After my performance here, I am already knocking at that door," said World Junior champion Harikrishna in an exclusive interview to PTI soon after his joint triumph in the Category-17 International invitational tournament.
And the unmistakable determination in his eyes is a just indication that the Hyderabad lad is as much capable of realising his immediate dreams.
"2700 obviously is the next target and even though I am aware that it will be a giant leap forward, I am going to give it my best shot in the coming months," he said.

Su embrión está en el grupo de aficionados que frecuentaba la perfumería de Don Valentín Corujo, en calle O’Reilly y Habana, entre quienes se encontraban el destacado ajedrecista Celso Golmayo, el sabio Carlos J. Finlay y Enrique Delmonte, ex director del Observatorio Nacional.
Luego trasladaron las tertulias y partidas ajedrecísticas a la botica de Don Canuto Valdés, en Obispo número 27, hasta que por iniciativa de uno de los miembros de esa peña, Plácido Domínguez, deciden dedicar un local exclusivamente para las batallas intelectuales sobre el tablero.

Ajedrez: Kasparov intentará demostrar que se el mejor en Linares

MADRID.- El ruso Gari Kasparov intentará demostrar en el próximo Torneo de Linares, que se disputará del 22 de febrero al 10 de marzo, que es el número uno del mundo, título que posee desde hace veinte años.
Kasparov va a tener que luchar mucho en esta edición. El indio Viswanathan Anand, que está en un buen momento, le va pisando los talones en la clasificación mundial y ya está segundo a sólo 18 puntos ELO del ruso.
El búlgaro Veselin Topalov consiguió colocarse. por primera vez, en el tercer puesto y también demostró últimamente sus aspiraciones para situarse el primero.

En el torneo internacional de verano del Club de Ajedrez Posadas de la capital de la provincia argentina de Misiones, nuestro tablero 2 en la última olimpiada de Mallorca obtuvo el título de campeón con 6,5 puntos e invicto.

Last year was a benchmark for southern Kien Giang Province’s young chess star, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son. Not only did he become one of the youngest people ever declared an International Chess Grand Master (GM), he also topped a poll of Viet Nam’s greatest and most popular sports personalities.

One of my "pet peeves" is the beating chess players take as far as the stereotype of being referred to as wimps and nerds.
Although the chess world does have a large number of social misfits and all-around strange people in its ranks, is the nerd stereotype fair?

Garry Kasparov never played Bobby Fischer and never will. "Wait a minute," says Bohumir Stedron, author of an article titled "Forecasts of Artificial Intelligence,"don't be so sure." In the March-April 2004 issue of the Futurist, Stedron predicted that by 2050 we will be able to mimic human thought processes. The Gibtele.com Masters International took place 25th January - 3rd February 2005. There was a five way tie for first with Levon Aronian, Zahar Efimenko, Kiril Georgiev, favourite Alexei Shirov and Emil Sutovsky all making 7.5/10. Daniel Gormally made his final GM norm.

Kramnik Exhibition Match

Minister President Peer Steinbrück has challenged Classical World Champion Vladimir Kramnik from Moscow to an exhibition game on March 5th 2005. Regarded by chess experts as a particularly ambitious and adept chess amateur, Peer Steinbrück is a serious opponent. We are told we "can expect a serious game of approximately one hour duration. There will be no handicap for one of the players. The exact rules of play will be published in due course or on the day of the event. " The event takes place at the Art and Exhibition Hall on Saturday, March 5 2005.

How player can become master

Appreciate the importance of counterplay in any type of position. I have been reading some aterial from Canadian GM Kevin Spragget on how to become a chess master.
Whether you want to become a master or not is not the issue. I feel this will benefit chess players across the board. This is what he has to say: "I’ve read virtually all of the main ‘classics’ of chess strategy and tactics, of theories of how to play chess (Steinitz, Lasker, Nimzovich) and the value of positional chess, and I have to agree with GM Mikhail Suba (Romania) when he says that all of those great players and teachers forgot one important thing: chess is a dynamic game!

Sasikiran disappoints in Gibtelecom chess festival

Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran suffered a defeat against Grandmaster Alexander Areshchenko of Ukraine in the 10th and final round to finish his campaign with just six points while five players tied for the top spot in the master's section of Gibtele.Com chess festival at Caleta hotel in Gibralter.
Grandmasters top seed Alexei Shirov of Spain, Zahar Efimenko of Ukraine, Emil Sutovsky of Israel, Kiril Georgiev of Bulgaria and Levon Aronian of Armenia shared the top place with an identical score of 7.5 points in this star-studded open event that featured 121 players.

Ephraim Kishon, 1924 – 2005

He was one of the most popular satirists of all time, with over 50 books selling 43 million copies in 37 different languages. He was also a chess enthusiast who survived the Holocaust by playing games against a guard. He even designed his own chess computer. Ephraim Kishon died on January 29, 2005, aged 80.(...)

El español de origen letón GM Alexei Shírov finalizó en el cuarto puesto empatado a puntos con el vencedor, el armenio GM Levon Aronian.
Al final de las 10 rondas disputadas cuatro jugadores finalizaron empatados con 7.0 puntos, los citados Shírov y Aronian, así como el israelí GM Emil Sutovsky y el búlgaro GM Kiril Georgiev. Cada uno de ellos se embolsó 3.000 Libras, alrededor de 4.200 Euros, correspondientes al reparto en iguales proporciones de los cuatro primeros premios, además Sutovsky se embolsó 500 Libras extras correspondientes al premio de belleza a la mejor partida, la que disputó con el inglés MI Daniel Gormally.

Chess federation president awaits court order

MUMBAI: The All India Chess Federation (AICF) president N Srinivasan is awaiting the original order of the Madras High Court which restrained the AICF secretary PT Ummer Koya and treasurer Soumen Majumdar from functioning.
The case was filed by the officials of Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Maharashtra chess associations against Koya's alleged illegal activities and financial irregularities.
"I have received a letter from the petitioner's counsel PV Balasubramaniam notifying the court order," said Srinivasan from Chennai on Wednesday. "But I can't react on this issue unless I see it."

Arquitectos valencianos diseñan la construcción de una Ciudad del Ajedrez en el golfo Pérsico

Una compañía inmobiliaria de Dubái, en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, ha encargado a arquitectos valencianos el diseño de la Ciudad del Ajedrez en esta parte del golfo Pérsico. Se trata de una nueva urbe donde vivirán unas cien mil personas, con edificios de hasta 280 metros de altura y que ocupará 487 hectáreas de desierto.

Première réunion du nouveau Bureau FFE

Réunis autour de Jean-Claude Moingt, les membres du nouveau bureau ont eu leur première réunion de travail. Bénéficiant de l'hospitalité du Nao Chess Club les nouveaux élus ont planché, durant plus de 5 h, sur de nombreux dossiers. Au coeur des discussions, l'état des lieux et la transition avec l'équipe sortante, l'organisation des grands rendez-vous nationaux, la mise en place des différentes commissions. La nouvelle politique de communication a été également longuement évoquée. De nombreux dossiers seront donc soumis au vote du prochain comité Directeur qui, autre nouveauté, aura lieu en Province. A Salon de Provence, courant mars 2005.

Perdió Leinier en Torneo de Ajedrez de Bermudas

El cubano Leinier Domínguez perdió este miércoles con el brasileño Giovanni Vescovi, en la tercera ronda del Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez de Bermudas, donde intervienen seis Grandes Maestros.
Domínguez, dueño de 2 661 puntos ELO y número 46 del mundo, condujo las piezas negras en un Gambito de Dama y abandonó luego de 55 movidas, frente a un oponente de 2 645 y ubicado en el 52 del orbe.
Esta fue la primera derrota de Domínguez, quien suma también una victoria frente al ucraniano Andrei Volokitin (2 685) y tablas ante el polaco Bartlomiej Macieja (2 618).

Sasikiran keeps title hopes alive

Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran bounced back into the reckoning with a finely-crafted victory over veteran Grandmaster Pia Cramling of Sweden, in the seventh round of the master's section of Gibtele.com chess festival in Gibraltar.
Having lost the previous round game, Sasikiran put himself in contention for top honours in this strong Open event that carries a total prize pool of over 15,000 pounds sterling.
Overnight leader GM Gabriel Sargissen of Armenia survived a few anxious moments before finally holding his own against top seeded Alexei Shirov of Spain in a keenly-contested game.

My Passion: Check out the joys of chess


DR Eugene Ross of Cleveland has found the perfect way of indulging in his passion for chess - he's started his own chess club.
Dr Ross was inspired to start the Redlands RSL Chess Club this month - the first non-school based one in Redland Shire - so he could share his love of the game with others and help people develop their thinking abilities.
Already he has 20 members ranging in age from eight years to 60 plus years.
"Health professionals tell us that in order to stay healthier and more alert, especially in older age, we need to exercise our minds," he said.
