`When the American Bobby Fischer took on the Russian Boris Spassky in Reykjavik in 1972, their chess match was seen as a metaphor for the Cold War.
During their nail-biting battle, won by Fischer, the men were not just operating at the extreme limits of their mental abilities, it was also their physical endurance that was being tested.
According to the benchmark study carried out by Temple University in the United States, the players' heart-lung rates and blood pressure were comparable to those of competing boxers and footballers. Fischer himself declared: "I've got to stay in shape or it's all over."

Chess has the status of a sport in many of the individual member countries. This may seem odd, but a game may last six or seven hours, during which the levels of stress on the body are considerable. Your heartbeat remains high throughout and the effect has been compared to several rounds of boxing. When I played my second World Championship Candidates match with Nigel Short in London in 1991 (he won), he lost more than half a stone in little more than a week.

Anand ensures victory in Amber Chess Tournament

Monaco, March 31 (PTI) Viswanathan Anand ensured his victory in the 14th Amber Chess Tournament with a round to spare here at Monte Carlo grand after drawing both the blindfold and rapid game against Russian Peter Svidler.
Taking his tally to an unassailable 14.5 points, Anand maintained his 3 points distance with Russian Alexander Morozevich and Hungarian Peter Leko with just one round or two games to come in this Euro 193,250 prize money tournament being played on a round-robin basis.
Anand also made sure of his unshared blindfold title after the draw with Svidler. As other results surfaced in this unique event that has one rapid and one blindfold game in each round, Anand was found to be 2 points ahead of his nearest rivals, Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine, Svidler and Leko, with just one game to go.

Deux vice-présidents de la FIDE, le Grec Georgios Markropoulos et le Singapourien Leong, et leur assistant Berik T.Balgabaev ont formulé cette demande lors d'une rencontre avec le vice-président du Comité populaire de Ho Chi Minh-Ville, Nguyên Thanh Tai.

La competencia constará de seis torneos suizos clasificatorios, que se realizarán los jueves 7, 14, 21 y 28 de abril, y 5 y 12 de mayo. Se podrá incluso, participar en todos ellos, pero si en uno el usuario se clasifica, ya no deberá participar en ninguno más, hasta la siguiente fase.

While it is important to know strategy and pursue a plan during the course of a game, considering each new position as a puzzle will permit you to consider more plausible plans in the position.

Anand sitting pretty with solid lead at Amber chess

Monaco, Mar 29 (PTI) Viswanathan Anand will have little to worry about when he takes on tail-ender Loek Van Wely of the Netherlands in the ninth round of the Amber Blindfold and Rapid chess tournament here later today.
Sitting pretty with a fantastic score of 12 points out of a possible 16 before the second and final rest day yesterday, Anand currently has a huge 2.5 points lead over nearest rival Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine and it looks very unlikely that anyone will catch up with the Indian ace in the rounds to come in this extraordinary tournament that has one blindfold and one rapid game in each round.
What is probably left for Anand to do here is better his previous score of 17 points (an Amber record so far) that he scored in his first victory here in 1994.

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 23, 2005 -- Atlanta-based Championship Chess will be a presenter at the annual Indiana Association of Home Educators Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, February 25 and 26, 2005. For more than 20 years, Championship Chess coaches have guided scholastic chess clubs that, consistently, have placed high in state championships.
Dennis A. Jones, a chess coach with Championship Chess and a former classroom teacher, will present “Chess: It’s More Than a Game” (Workshop 2, Room 211) and, for the second consecutive year, will demonstrate materials and methods of teaching chess at Booth #107. Children in attendance will also have an opportunity to play.
Both the materials and the methods were developed by Stephen A. Schneider, who is the director of Championship Chess and the author of The Scholastic Chess Series. The Series includes Chess Basics, Chess Openings I, Endgames Strategies I and a chess readiness activity book, Color My Chess World, that introduces pre-chess activities to very young children. Schneider, who has been teaching chess to children for more than 30 years, teaches chess incrementally, using chess strategies from day one. As student players advance, they are taught strategies that apply critical thinking skills like visualization, thinking ahead, thinking concretely and abstractly, weighing options, focusing and planning.

El ajedrecista Bobby Fischer se reunió con la prensa en Islandia, con su cabello y su barba pulcramente recortados, y en su primer día de libertad declaró que estaba harto del mundo ajedrecístico, al que consideró 'corrupto'.
Fischer se mostró feliz de estar en Islandia, que le otorgó la ciudadanía a fin de allanar el camino para que fuera liberado de su detención en Japón, donde había sido arrestado tras un pedido de extradición de Estados Unidos.
En una conferencia de prensa en su hotel, un combativo Fischer discutió con periodistas estadounidenses que le preguntaron acerca de sus opiniones anti-norteamericanas.

Del miércoles día 23 hasta el domingo día 27, el Centro Cultural San Sebastián acogió una nueva edición de esta prestigiosa cita con el tablero que reúne a los grandes de dicha disciplina, tanto en el ámbito nacional como en el internacional. De hecho, este torneo viene celebrándose ininterrumpidamente desde el año 1974, bajo la organización de la sección de Ajedrez del Club Polideportivo La Roda.
En la presente edición, resultó ganador del Torneo el Gran Maestro Internacional ruso Oleg Korneev quien logró el primer puesto del XXXII Torneo Internacional de Ajedrez de La Roda al vencer en la última ronda, en una disputada partida, al argentino Horacio Saldaño.

Vietnamese boy awarded chess Grand Master

Ha Noi, Mar. 28 (VNA) - The International Chess Federation (FIDE) officially recognised Vietnamese chess player Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son as a Grand Master on Mar. 24.
At 14 years and 10 months old, Son, with Elo 2520, is the second youngest international grandmaster in the world. The youngest was a French boy, Etienne Bacrot, who became one in March 1997 when he was just 14 years and two months old.

Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son reconnu grand maître international

Hanoi, 28 mars (AVI) - Le jeune joueur d'échecs du Vietnam, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (performance 2520 Elo), a été sacré grand maître international (Grand Master) par la Fédération Mondiale des Echecs (FIDE), dans son annonce du 24 mars.

Aunque es el Maestro Internacional más joven que ha tenido Venezuela, Eduardo Iturrizaga aspira a más: quiere convertirse en el primer venezolano en alcanzar el título de Gran Maestro Internacional, el galardón más alto que concede la FIDE (Federación Internacional de Ajedrez).
Con sólo quince años, ya logró su primera norma de las tres que exige la FIDE para obtener el título de GMI, y espera obtener las otras dos antes de que concluya el año 2006. En el país sus resultados son excelentes y acaba de ganar un torneo abierto realizado en Cabimas con la presencia de noventa y siete jugadores, entre ellos seis Maestros Internacionales, logrando seis puntos y medio de siete posibles. Dice que quiere dedicarse profesionalmente al juego ciencia y llegar a lo más alto, aunque sabe que para lograrlo tendrá que hacer algo que no le gusta mucho: entrenar duramente.

ABOARD SAS FLIGHT SK984 - Sitting in the first-class cabin whisking him away from a nine-month-long detention in Japan, chess icon Bobby Fischer on Thursday launched a rambling diatribe against the United States, calling it "an illegitimate country" that should be given back to the American Indians.
The reclusive Fischer — who is taking up residence in Iceland to avoid arrest in the United States — also unleashed his anger at Israel and likened President Bush to a comic-book character.
Fischer said he was "kidnapped" in Japan, and that Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi were in cahoots trying to deprive him of freedom and return him to the United States, where he is wanted on criminal charges.

El legendario maestro del ajedrez, el estadounidense Bobby Fischer llegó el jueves en la noche a Islandia, cuyas autoridades le concedieron la nacionalidad para permitirle evadir una orden de arresto de Estados Unidos, constató la AFP en Reykjavik.
Después de haber permanecido ocho meses detenido en Japón, donde corría el riesgo de ser extraditado a Estados Unidos, la leyenda viva del ajedrez, de 62 años, llegó a las 23h15 locales (23H15 GMT) a Islandia, después de un largo viaje desde Tokio, con una escala en Copenhague, en un vuelo de la compañía escandinava SAS.
Tras su parada en Dinamarca, Bobby Fischer se embarcó en un avión privado fletado por la televisión islandesa Channel 2.
Debido a una densa neblina, el avión tuvo que ser desviado a Suecia antes de volver hacia Islandia dónde aterrizó sobre el pequeño aeropuerto urbano de Reykjavik.

Fischer, reclamado por la justicia de Estados Unidos, afirmó, en una entrevista a Associated Press durante el vuelo que le llevaba a Copenhagen para luego ser trasladado a Islandia, que el país norteamericano es "ilegítimo, al igual que Israel, donde los judios no tienen derechos", dijo el ajedrezista, cuya madre era judía.
Fischer, en su habitual discurso en contra de Estados Unidos, aseguró que actualmente es "una vergüenza ser llamado americano porque todo el mundo que vive allí es un invasor". O antigo campeão mundial de xadrez Bobby Fischer foi ontem libertado após oito meses de cativeiro no Japão e partiu para Reiquejavique, na Islândia, país que lhe concedeu a cidadania para evitar a extradição do norte-americano para os EUA. Fischer, 62 anos, estava detido desde 12 de Julho de 2004, depois de ter tentado abandonar o Japão com um passaporte inválido; os Estados Unidos emitiram um mandado para a sua captura em 1992.
Já na posse do seu novo passaporte islandês e antes de embarcar num avião da Scandinavian para Reiquejavique com escala em Copenhaga, Fischer teceu duras críticas aos governos japonês e americano. "Isto não foi uma prisão. Foi um rapto cozinhado por Bush e Koizumi", afirmou o xadrezista, referindo-se ao Presidente dos EUA e ao primeiro-ministro do Japão como "criminosos de guerra que deviam ser enforcados".

On a high after a rocking start, which fetched him as many as 7.5 points from the possible eight, Viswanathan Anand would now look to continue his fine run after the first rest day in the Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess tournament here.
The Indian ace, who has a comfortable two points lead over his nearest rivals, would taken on Vassily Ivachuk of Ukraine in the fifth round and given his form in the tournament so far Anand would surely be looking at claiming full points from the encounter.

NARITA, Japan (AP) -- Sporting a long beard, chess legend Bobby Fischer walked free from a Japanese detention center Thursday and immediately headed to the airport to fly to his new home - Iceland - following a nine-month standoff with Tokyo officials trying to deport him to the United States.
Before leaving, however, the eccentric genius offered a few parting shots to the leaders of Japan and the United States, whom he accused of "kidnapping."
"I won't be free until I get out of Japan," he told a crowd of reporters at the airport here before boarding his flight to Copenhagen en route to Reykjavic. "This was not an arrest. It was a kidnapping cooked up by Bush and Koizumi," he said, referring to President Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
"They are war criminals and should be hung," he said.

El ajedrecista estaba acompañado por su novia, Mikoyo Watai, el presidente de la asociación de ajedrez japonesa y miembros de la Embajada de Islandia. Fischer debía tomar un vuelo a Dinamarca para coger allí otro aparato hasta Islandia, país que le otorgó la ciudadanía.

Son held for chess master's murder

A MILD-MANNERED British chess grand master has been stabbed to death in his kitchen in Sweden.
Police said the attack on Simon Webb, 55, was carried out by his disturbed adult son, who took the family car straight after the stabbing and rammed it at high speed against a bus shelter.
"We were playing together in the finals of the Swedish Chess League in Malmo," leading Swedish player Per Foederberg said. "Simon said goodbye and travelled by train to Stockholm. He must have arrived home at about 1am, and then had an argument with his son."
Police said the 25-year-old son, a convicted drug dealer, pushed his father then reached for a kitchen knife and dug it into Webb's stomach. The brawl was watched by Webb's wife who, as soon as the son stormed out of the house, called police and tried to stem the bleeding.

Viswanathan Anand has proved who rules the chess world in absence of Russian Garry Kasparov.
He registered a clinical victory against Vladimir Kramnik in the fourth round of the Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess tournament here.
Anand with an inimitable 7/7 score maintained his all-win record in the tournament and appeared unstoppable in his quest for his fourth Amber chess title here.
The victory also helped Anand stretch his lead to a phenomenal 2.5 points against his nearest rivals -- Hungarian Peter Leko, Russian Alexander Morozevich and Ukrainian Vassily Ivanchuk.

U.S. demands Japan hand over chess legend Fischer

WASHINGTON — The United States demanded Tuesday that Japan hand over Bobby Fischer despite Iceland's move to accept the chess legend currently detained by Japanese immigration authorities since last July.
"That's what we've asked for," Adam Ereli, deputy spokesman for the U.S. State Department, told reporters, when asked if the United States wants Japan to hand him over to the United States.
Ereli expressed "disappointment" about the Icelandic parliament's decision Monday to grant citizenship to Fischer, 62.
"It's an arrangement that we're disappointed by. Mr Fischer is a fugitive from justice. There is a federal warrant for his arrest. He's being detained in Japan, awaiting deportation and that's the step that we're looking forward to," he said.

Anand wins six out of six in amazing run

British chess player 'killed by son'

A leading British chess player has been stabbed to death by his son at his home in Sweden.
Simon Webb, 55, was stabbed at least 20 times by the 25-year-old late at night after he returned from a tournament in Malmo on March 13.
Mr Webb's wife, the mother of the assailant, walked in on the pair to see her husband lying on the floor.
The son, who has not been named, then took the couple's car and drove it at high speed into a bus shelter in what police believe was an attempted suicide.

Amber Chess: Rampaging Anand crushes Topalov

World Rapid champion Viswanathan Anand continued with his devastating form and scored another comprehensive 2-0 victory over Bulgarian Veselin Topalov in the second round of the 14th edition of Amber Blindfold and Rapid chess tournament now underway in Monaco.
Anand gave a superb display of tactical chess in two games of the day and remained the sole leader with an absolute score of 4/4 that is a record of sorts here.
The Indian ace, who started with a 2-0 drubbing of Spaniard Alexei Shirov in round one, now has a slender half point lead over nearest rival Peter Svidler of Russia who crushed Israeli Boris Gelfand in both form of the games to move to 3.5 points.

The first round of one of the most competitive events produced as many as five decisive games out of a possible six, bringing out as many as five leaders with the first round at the Monte Carlo Grand hotel.

The Great Game - How life imitates chess.

LONDON--Thirty years ago at the Soviet Junior Championship I played my first major chess event at the national level. Twenty years ago in Moscow I became the youngest World Champion in history. Last week in Spain I played my final serious games of chess, winning the Linares super-tournament for the ninth time. After three decades as a professional chess player, the last two ranked No. 1, I have decided to retire from professional chess.
It's not common, in our age, for someone to retire while still at the top; but I'm a man who needs a goal, and who wants to make a difference. My accomplishments and contributions are for others to judge, but I feel that I am no longer playing an essential role in chess. With reclaiming the unified world championship out of reach due to political chaos in the chess world, I am reduced to unfulfilling repetition.
I have always set ambitious goals, and I have been lucky enough to attain most of them. I have achieved everything there is to achieve in the chess arena, arguably more than any other player in history. Meanwhile, there are other areas where I can still make a difference, where I can set new goals and find new channels for my energy. At the age of 41, I believe there is still much I can accomplish. My experiences in the chess world have provided me with an excellent foundation for these new challenges.

FIDE wishes to express its regret at the recent announcement of GM Garry Kasparov to retire from professional chess. The whole chess community owes Garry Kasparov a great deal of appreciation and respect for his contribution to world chess and for his tireless efforts to promote our sport during the last 30 years.
It is very difficult to defend the No.1 position for 20 years and at the same time to be engaged in so many other activities. This is what makes GM Garry Kasparov`s accomplishments over the board even more admirable.
There is a general impression that the World Championship unification might now become a simpler procedure but, if it comes, it comes with a high price: the absence of a great personality like Garry Kasparov. It is certainly an extraordinary loss for our sport.

Every day the grandmasters play one Rapid game and one Blindfold game, of around one hour per game. The Blindfold games they play on a computer. For the players only an empty chess board is visible on the screen. With the mouse or the keyboard they can make a move, which will then appear on the screens of both players. After they have confirmed their move, the players see the move disappear and the clock of the opponent starts running. Various monitors in the playing room show the course of the game, which is perfectly visible for the arbiter and the audience, but not for the grandmasters.

Bobby Fischer gets more Diet support

Justice Minister Chieko Noono has come under fire over the continued incarceration in an Immigration Bureau detention center of chess Grand Master Bobby Fischer, the Mainichi has learned.
Democratic Party of Japan stalwart Satsuki Eda told a House of Councilors Committee on Judicial Affairs meeting that the Ministry of Justice was jeopardizing Japan's bid for a permanent place on the United Nations Security Council by continuing to hold Fischer.
Eda said that Japan's insistence on only deporting the chess whizz to his U.S. homeland instead of Iceland, where he wants to go, constitutes a violation of human rights unlikely to stand Japan in good stead.
He asked Noono whether she felt this was acceptable, but the Justice Minister -- who could free Fischer immediately if she chose to do so -- remained non-committal.
"I've got lots to worry about at the moment, but I want to come up with a solution as soon as possible," the Minister said during the Thursday meeting.

En sortant par la grande porte et en remportant le prestigieux tournoi de Linares (Andalousie), considéré comme le Wimbledon des échecs.

REYKJAVIK, Iceland -- Lawmakers in Iceland are likely to grant citizenship to mercurial chess genius Bobby Fischer, who currently sits in a Japanese cell, a member of a parliamentary committee studying the issue said Wednesday.
Gudrun Ogmundsdottir told The Associated Press that a citizenship motion probably would be approved by the nine-member committee Thursday. If it passes, it will go before Iceland's 63-member parliament, the Althingi.
"I think that parliament may approve of the citizenship as early as tomorrow," said Ogmundsdottir, a member of the opposition Alliance Party.

In the sometimes genteel, sometimes weird world of professional chess, Garry Kasparov has been the nearest thing to God for years: omnipotent, all-seeing, with a mind like a Pentium processor and the work rate of Hercules on amphetamines.
Like many more or less dilettante chess players, I have followed Kasparov's chess career with undisguised awe and at times outright envy. While I spent too many years of my youth trying in vain to climb the greasy pole of English junior chess, Kasparov was conquering the world in his early 20s. When leading Western grandmasters were giving up chess for accounting in the face of a post-Soviet influx of their East European counterparts in the early 1990s, Kasparov was trouncing Britain's geeky challenger Nigel Short without breaking a sweat.

The decision by Gary Kasparov, the world's top chess player, to retire from the game and devote his talents to opposing Vladimir Putin will hardly induce the Kremlin's grandmaster to resign his position. But Kasparov's move reflects broader, increasingly vocal discontent over the president's perceived descent into authoritarianism. The Putin paradox is that the more he tries to exert control, the more uncontrollable a changing Russia may ultimately prove to be.
Kasparov's assertion that the country "is heading down the wrong path" echoed the words of a more formidable political figure, Mikhail Kasyanov, prime minister during Putin's first term and finance minister under Boris Yeltsin.

La celebración del próximo Campeonato Mundial de Ajedrez en Israel corre el riesgo de suspenderse por falta de dinero para financiarlo, ha advertido la directora de la Asociación Israelí de este deporte, Dana Gutman.
La institución, informó, necesita un aporte estatal de un millón y medio de 'shekels' (alrededor de 400.000 dólares) para sufragar los gastos que ocasionará el campeonato.
En caso de no conseguir esos fondos y cancelar su celebración en Israel, la Asociación local del juego-ciencia tendrá que pagar una multa de 10.000 francos suizos, señaló Gutman.

Xadrez melhora desempenho na escola, diz pesquisa

Uma pesquisa realizada pelo mestre internacional da Federação de Xadrez, Antonio Carlos de Resende, mostrou que estudantes que jogam xadrez com regularidade possuem médias superiores aos que não aderiram à prática.
No colégio Albert Sabin, foram pesquisados 13 alunos alfabetizados ao mesmo tempo que recebiam as aulas de xadrez. O resultado foi de mais de dois pontos na média anual dos alunos que praticam o esporte.
"O xadrez é um facilitador da aprendizagem, pois exercita o raciocínio, a imaginação, a criatividade, a atenção e a concentração dos alunos", garantiu Resende.

Japan likely to deport chess legend Fischer to US

TOKYO, Japan -- Japan indicated Tuesday it would likely deport US chess legend Bobby Fischer to the United States where he faces prison for defying sanctions on Yugoslavia in 1992, despite an offer of residency from Iceland.
"The fundamental principle is that the destination of deportation is the country of the person's nationality," Masaharu Miura, chief of the justice ministry's immigration bureau, said in a parliamentary committee.
"Regarding this case, we do not consider it to be an exception," he said.
But Miura acknowledged exceptions had been made in the past including for an Iranian who was denied refugee status in Japan but sent to Canada after the Ottawa government accepted the person.
Miura was responding to Kazuya Shinba, a lawmaker from the opposition Democratic Party, who said Fischer's months of detention had raised suspicions that Japan was acting at the behest of the United States.
Shinba cited a news report saying that Washington hoped to charge Fischer with tax evasion, saying it looked as if Japan was biding time until it had grounds to extradite the maverick genius.
Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura told the same committee: "I have no memory of receiving a request from the American side to send Mr Fischer over."(...)

Archaeologists tackle chess puzzle

A grubby green cousin of the world's most famous chessmen is puzzling archaeologists.
The little knight on horseback, recently found by an amateur using a metal detector on farmland in north Nottinghamshire, is startlingly similar to chesspieces found hundreds of miles away in 1831, on a beach on the isle of Lewis.
The find is being announced today at a British Museum conference to mark the government's agreement to keep funding a scheme to encourage the reporting of all finds.
Not being of great commercial value, but of immense historic importance, the knight is the sort of find that might not previously have been reported.

Le champion d'échecs dénonce la "dictature grandissante" du maître du Kremlin. Il estime notamment qu'il "n'y a plus de presse libre".


L e numéro un mondial des échecs Garry Kasparov, qui vient de définitivement se retirer de la compétition dans cette discipline, a déclaré lundi qu'il voulait lutter contre "la dictature grandissante de Poutine" en Russie.
Le président russe Vladimir "Poutine construit ce qu'il considère comme la meilleure solution pour la Russie, une dictature", a dit le champion d'échecs, dans un entretien avec la BBC radio.
"M. Poutine a hérité d'un pays où la démocratie avait des défauts, mais c'était une démocratie", a insisté M. Kasparov.
"Il y avait une presse libre, une presse d'opposition, un Parlement indépendant, qui s'est même opposé au président (Boris) Eltsine (NDLR : le prédécesseur de Poutine), et des élections équitables, où même les candidats d'opposition pouvaient s'attendre à être élus".

Hasta sus enemigos loan a Kaspárov

Gari Kaspárov tiene muy pocos amigos y casi ninguno entre los ajedrecistas de élite. Pero el ambiente fue tan emotivo el jueves, durante el anuncio de su retirada en Linares, que varios ases del ajedrez se mostraron incapaces de pensar sobre el futuro sin Kaspárov. A los 42 años es una figura irrepetible que eligió retirarse tras veinte años seguidos como número uno y después de su noveno triunfo en Linares.
Aunque su madre era un mar de lágrimas, Kaspárov aguantó sin llorar casi toda la ceremonia de clausura, incluso cuando el alcalde, Juan Fernández, abrazó muy efusivamente a ambos en el escenario. Pero "El Ogro de Bakú" no pudo resistir el llanto al final, cuando le abrazó Luis Rentero, el hombre que hace un cuarto de siglo convirtió la ciudad jiennense de 60.000 habitantes en la meca del ajedrez.
Rentero es ahora el dueño del hotel Aníbal, la sede del torneo, y cuyas paredes están adornadas con fotos de eminentes ajedrecistas. Tras el abrazo, el artífice del Ciudad de Linares anunció que desde hoy la habitación 103 y la sala de juego llevarán el nombre de Kaspárov.

Con la tranquilidad que da haber tomado una decisión tan difícil, pero al mismo tiempo tan meditada, Gary Kasparov, que en abril cumplirá 42 años, recibe a Marca en la suite 103, que desde ayer lleva su nombre. La habitación del campeón rebosa energía, mientras poco a poco recoge sus cosas, ante la mirada triste de su madre, Clara Kasparova, que abiertamente pregunta: "¿Qué ocurrirá a partir de ahora?".

Pocos campeones se han retirado siendo el número uno. ¿De dónde ha sacado fuerzas para tomar una decisión tan radical?
Soy una persona que marca diferencias. Todavía puedo ganar muchos torneos y a cualquier jugador, pero lo único que me mantenía ilusionado era saber si finalmente iba a unificarse el título mundial. La FIDE y Kramnik están toreándome y esquivando cualquier posible encuentro. Para mí los desafíos son muy importantes. En la situación actual, ¿qué me espera? Ir de torneo en torneo, a la búsqueda de qué... Siento la obligación de emplear mi intelecto y mi fuerza en cosas beneficiosas para los demás y para mí. Creo que en el ajedrez ya no puedo hacer nada más.

¿Sigue siendo Kasparov el mejor del mundo? ¿Merece su número uno o su posición en el trono del ajedrez se debe más bien a lo conservador que resulta el sistema de puntuación inventado en los años sesenta por el físico Arpad Elo? Con estas preguntas flotando en el aire arrancó el pasado 22 de febrero el torneo de Linares, que en esta XXII edición tenía, además, un valor añadido. Y es que, por primera vez, Gary Kasparov disputaba esta gran competición bajo la amenaza de perder su número uno. Viswanathan Anand estaba en disposición de arrebatárselo. No era un objetivo fácil, pero la posibilidad como tal existía. Todo pasaba porque el genial ajedrecista hindú afincado en Collado Mediano (Madrid) completara un gran torneo y el campeón ruso rindiera a un bajo nivel.

Kasparov Swaps Chess for Politics

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Former world champion Garry Kasparov said on Friday he had retired from competition chess to devote himself to Russian politics and oppose President Vladimir Putin.
The world's number one chess player is a leading member of a liberal grouping known as Committee 2008, set up by liberals after their disastrous showing in the 2003 parliamentary election.
"I have done everything I could in chess and more. Now I plan to use my intellect and strategic thoughts in Russian politics," Kasparov said in a statement, quoted by Interfax news agency.
Kasparov, 41, announced his departure after winning a prestigious tournament in the southern Spanish town of Linares for the ninth time on Thursday.
He said he would still dabble in the game, but at a strictly non-professional level.
"I believe that at the moment the country is moving in the wrong direction, therefore it is necessary to help Russia, to help Russian citizens to make the country comfortable, just and free," he said in the statement.
"I will do everything possible to oppose Putin's dictatorship," he said.

Garry Kasparov va se lancer dans la politique

MOSCOU - L'ancien champion du monde d'échecs russe Garry Kasparov a annoncé sa décision de renoncer à la compétition. Il souhaite se consacrer à la politique dans son pays pour s'opposer au «régime dictatorial» de Vladimir Poutine.
«J'ai entrepris tout ce qu'il était possible de faire dans le domaine des échec, et même plus. J'envisage désormais de mettre mes qualités intellectuelles et de raisonnement tactique au service de la vie politique russe», a-t-il expliqué dans un communiqué.
L'ancien prodige des échecs est un membre en vue d'un mouvement réformateur connu sous le nom de Comité 2008. Celui-ci a été créé par des libéraux à la suite de leur débâcle aux élections législatives de 2003.
Dans son communiqué, l'ancien champion du monde met les points sur les i: «Je crois qu'actuellement la Russie fait fausse route; aussi devient-il nécessaire d'aider mon pays, d'aider les citoyens russes à rendre leur pays plus juste et plus libre.» «Je vais faire tout mon possible pour m'opposer à la dictature de Poutine».

Entiendo que hay muchas noticias de gran trascendencia o calado social. Entiendo que nunca hay tiempo ni espacio para todo. Entiendo que la minoría no puede imponer su criterio a la mayoría. Entiendo, incluso, que manden las audiencias. Pero lo que no entiendo es la absoluta marginación informativa que sufre el ajedrez en España, año tras año, en prensa, radio y televisión. No lo entiendo porque en Linares, Dos Hermanas y León se organizan algunos de los torneos más importantes del mundo y contamos con grandes maestros como Paco Vallejo. Por favor, promocionen el ajedrez. Igual que Fernando Argenta demuestra en TVE que la música clásica no es aburrida, alguien podría hacer lo propio con el ajedrez.

Es culpa de la fide

Es digno de resaltar el hecho de que los dos jugadores más grandes que ha dado el ajedrez, Bobby Fisher y Kasparov, se hayan visto empujados a abandonar su deporte a causa de sus desavenencias con la Federación Internacional. Los dirigentes son culpables de este nuevo abandono como lo fueron de la retirada prematura del estadounidense. Deberían preguntarse qué están haciendo mal y no lo hacen.
A mí me tocó vivir la época de Fisher y pensé que era algo irrepetible. De pronto surgió este monstruo que a los 17 años ya era un número uno y que fue campeón a los 22.
Estamos hablando de dos genios -el coeficiente intelectual de Fisher es de 192 y el de Kasparov no es mucho menor- y a menudo este tipo de personas pueden tener comportamientos excesivos.

After winning a prestigious tournament in the southern Spanish town of Linares for the ninth time on Thursday he told reporters that he wanted to devote himself to a career in politics and as a writer.
’’I will play chess, because I like it a lot, but not professionally. I may play in simultaneous games or fast games, but nothing more,’’ he said. But the chessman stressed that he had to take this decision because he had been under enormous pressure from the World Chess Federation (FIDE) in recent years and hadn’t received any support from the organization.

Fischer passe son 62ème anniversaire dans un centre de rétention au Japon

L'ex-champion du monde d'échecs Bobby Fischer, détenu au Japon et menacé d'extradition vers les Etats-Unis, a passé mercredi son 62ème anniversaire, en compagnie d'amis, dans un centre de rétention des services de l'immigration.
Sa fiancée, Miyoko Watai, la présidente de la Fédération japonaise d'échecs, et des amis islandais lui ont rendu visite dans le centre de rétention d'Ushiku (est du Japon), a indiqué John Bosnitch, qui dirige son comité de soutien.
"Mais ils n'ont pas pu lui apporter de nourriture ou lui offrir un gâteau, ou quoi ce soit", a expliqué M. Bosnitch à l'AFP.
L'avocate de Fischer, Masako Suzuki, attend toujours une décision du ministère de la Justice sur les demandes de mise en liberté du grand maître américain.
"Jusqu'ici, elle n'a pas eu de nouvelles", a déploré M. Bostnitch.
Le comité de soutien de Bobby Fischer a menacé d'engager "immédiatement" des poursuites contre le gouvernement de Tokyo s'il n'est pas libéré d'ici la fin de la semaine.

Bobby Fischer, una leyenda del ajedrez

El norteamericano Robert Fischer, uno de los mejores ajedrecistas de todos los tiempos, celebró este 9 de marzo su 62 cumpleaños confinado en un centro de detención japonés, donde se encuentra desde hace siete meses por tratar de viajar con un pasaporte estadounidense revocado.
No obstante, sus abogados aseguran que Fischer cuenta con todas las herramientas legales para poder salir en breve de Japón: un pasaporte nuevo otorgado por Islandia, un billete de avión ya pagado y su petición propia de ser deportado voluntariamente.
El problema está en que el ex campeón del mundo de ajedrez carece del visto bueno de las autoridades de inmigración niponas y sigue inmerso en una batalla legal en los tribunales del país asiático, donde permanece bloqueada una orden de deportación emitida por Washington.
Para intentar salir del trance tiene el apoyo del islandés Gudmundur Thorarinsson, ex diputado y organizador del denominado Match del Siglo de 1972 en Reykjavik, donde Bobby Fischer destronó al entonces rey del ajedrez, el soviético Boris Spassky.

Ajedrez: Garry Kasparov se coronó campeón en Linares

LINARES.- El ruso Garry Kasparov se coronó hoy campeón del torneo magistral de ajedrez de Linares cuando falta una jornada, tras hacer tablas con el indio Viswanathan Anand.
Kasparov, quien conquistó el certamen por octava vez en su carrera, sumó 8 puntos y se hizo inalcanzable para el búlgaro Vesselin Topalov (7), su inmediato perseguidor.
Topalov, quien hoy derrotó al español Franscico Vallejo en 38 jugadas de una apertura inglesa, se medirá mañana, con blancas, contra Kasparov, y en caso de ganarle no le alcanzaría para quedarse con el título.
Es que más allá de que ambos jugadores quedarían empatados en ocho unidades, se aplica la regla de que sale campeón el que ganó más partidas y en dicho caso también estarían igualados.
Entonces define quien consiguió más victorias con negras y en ese rubro Kasparov aventaja a Topalov.

Búlgaro está a um ponto do campeão russo no Magistral de Xadrez de Linares

O búlgaro Vesselin Topalov venceu ontem o espanhol Paco Vallejo na 13ª e penúltima jornada do Magistral de Xadrez de Linares e reduziu para um ponto a distância para o líder da prova, o russo Gary Kasparov. O torneio ficará hoje decidido, pois Topalov defrontará Kasparov e em caso de vitória igualará o russo na pontuação final, com a vantagem de o ter vencido no confronto directo.
A partida que concentrava maior expectativa era a que opunha Kasparov ao indiano Anand, pois este se ganhasse manteria em aberto as possibilidades de triunfo. No entanto, desde a abertura que foi notória a intenção de Anand de não arriscar optando pela sólida defesa Petroff. O acordo de empate ao 22º lance pareceu agradar a ambos com o indiano a demonstrar falta de ambição. É o que faz a diferença entre os grandes campeões, pois seria impensável que Kasparov renunciasse à possibilidade de ganhar a prova.

JAKARTA: Teenage FIDE Master (WFM) Irene Kharisma of Indonesia will take on Women's Grand Master (WGM) Anya Sun Corke of Hong Kong in a five-day chess matchup starting on Saturday.
Irene, 13, won a silver medal as the second best point winner on board three in last year's Chess Olympia in Calvia, Spain. Corke, now 15, was the youngest woman to attain a GM title at 14.

Kasparov continues to win!

Today Kasparov had to face Adams with black and from the very first moves it was clear that a draw would not be likely. In no time a sharp Sicilian was on the board and at move 19 Kasparov sank into deep thought. Many people thought that white was simply better, but the post-mortem showed different. Although white’s attack looked dangerous, Kasparov explained afterwards that in fact both white and black have no real threats yet and should just consolidate. Adams made a small mistake with 20.Bg5 followed by a blunder 2 moves later after which he had to resign soon.

Wanted since 1992 PHILADELPHIA - A federal grand jury in Washington is investigating possible money-laundering charges involving former chess champion Bobby Fischer, who is already wanted for violating U.S. economic sanctions, one of his lawyers said.
''This is a pure tactical and propaganda ploy,'' attorney Richard Vattuone said.
Federal prosecutors issued a subpoena last week to a second lawyer, Joseph Choate Jr., who once represented Fischer, ordering him to appear March 17 before the grand jury to discuss a ''possible violation'' of money-laundering statutes.

Japão pressionado para libertar Fischer

Um grupo de amigos do ex-campeão do mundo de xadrez Bobby Fischer - detido no Japão e em risco de ser extraditado para os EUA - ameaçaram tomar medidas contra as autoridades japonesas, caso o norte-americano não seja libertado até ao final da semana. Também a advogada de Fischer, Masako Suzuki, considera que não há motivos para o seu constituinte continuar detido, já que um dos argumentos para a sua detenção, a inexistência de um passaporte válido, deixou de existir a partir do momento em que a Islândia - país onde se sagrou campeão em 1972 - lhe forneceu um.

Haussant le ton, les amis de Fischer ont également promis de faire campagne publiquement contre la candidature du Japon à un siège de membre permanent du Conseil de sécurité de l'ONU, la priorité numéro un de la diplomatie nippone, si le légendaire Américain ne recouvre pas la liberté.
Le Japon a lancé, conjointement avec l'Allemagne, l'Inde et le Brésil, une offensive pour obtenir de siéger de manière permanente au Conseil de sécurité aux cotés des cinq pays membres depuis 1945 (Etat-Unis, Chine, France, Grande-Bretagne et Russie).
"Soit le gouvernement japonais consentira à autoriser Bobby Fischer à quitter le Japon conformément à ses propres lois... ou, s'il refuse, nous engagerons immédiatement des poursuites", a expliqué John Bosnitch, qui est à la tête du comité de soutien.

El número uno del mundo, el ruso Gari Kasparov, derrotó este martes, con negras, el inglés Michael Adams en 26 movimientos y tres horas de juego, en la undécima ronda del Torneo de Linares que se disputa en esta ciudad.
El búlgaro Veselin Topalov, tercero del mundo, venció, con blancas al campeón del mundo de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE), el uzbeco Rustam Kasimdzhanov.

Sus amigos del comité de apoyo que propugna su libertad le han hecho un regalo muy especial, un billete de avión para salir de Japón, cuya validez expira a los tres meses. Y el gobierno de Islandia, donde se coronó campeón del mundo contra Boris Spassky (Reykjavik, 1972), ha decidido concederle un pasaporte y un permiso de residencia.

Concluyó el VI torneo Memorial Karpov de ajedrez

Con la victoria del GM francés Etienne Bacrot, finalizó este lunes la VI versión del torneo internacional de ajedrez "Memorial Karpov", en la ciudad rusa de Poikovsky. El joven galo terminó empatado con el moldavo Victor Bologan, con 6 de 9, pero lo superó en el Sonnenborg-Berger.
Todas las partidas de la ronda final terminaron en tablas: Bologan-Dreev, Sadvakasov-Bacrot, Onischuk-Svidler y Grischuk-Vaganián y la adelantada Rublevsky-Leinier.

Fischer does time in solitary confinement after tussle over egg

TOKYO — Detained former chess champion Bobby Fischer was placed in solitary confinement for four days last week after a dispute over an egg, his supporters said Monday.
Fischer's fiancee Miyoko Watai, who met him Monday morning at the Ushiku immigration detention center in Ibaraki Prefecture, told a press conference that Fischer asked for an egg at breakfast last Wednesday. When he was refused, he grabbed an official, tearing his shirt. Then several guards rushed to suppress him, she said.
"In the struggle, Mr Fischer's fist punched the face of one of the officials," said Watai.

Cubano Domínguez finaliza séptimo en torneo de ajedrez en Rusia

Moscú, 7 mar (PL) El Gran Maestro (GM) cubano Leinier Domínguez finalizó hoy en el séptimo puesto del torneo internacional de ajedrez de Poikovsky, Rusia, dominado por el francés Etienne Bracot.
Domínguez no jugó en la última ronda, después de haber adelantado la partida correspondiente a la fecha ante el ruso Sergei Rublevski y terminó con cuatro unidades de nueve posibles, producto de un triunfo, seis empates y dos derrotas.
El cubano derrotó al kazajo Darmen Sadvakasov, cedió ante el ruso Alexey Dreev y el moldavo Viktor Bologan, y dividió con los locales Alexander Grischuk, Rublevsky y Svidler, además del estadounidense Onischuk, el armenio Rafael Vaganian y Bracot.
El campeón del torneo terminó con seis puntos, luego de igualar en la última ronda con Sadvakasov, similar palmarés que Bologan, quien también dividió ante Dreev, pero concluyó con inferior puntuación de desempate.
Detrás de los punteros, en los puestos tercero y cuarto, se ubicaron Grischuk y Dreev, ambos con 5.5 unidades.

Chess: Anand moves to second spot

Linares (Spain), March 7: Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand kept his title hopes alive as he closed in on tournament leader Garry Kasparov with a brilliantly crafted victory over Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan in the 11th round of the Linares Super Grandmasters chess tournament here.
Anand took his tally to 5.5 points from nine games so far but still remained a full point adrift of the Russian world number one who has played equal number of games.

Ajedrez. Trofeo de Linares: El indio Anand vence al uzbeco Kasimdzhanov y se acerca a Kasparov

El indio Viswanathan Anand, segundo del mundo, derrotó hoy, con negras, al campeón del mundo de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE), el uzbeco Rustam Kasimdzhanov en la décima ronda del Torneo de Linares que se disputa en esta ciudad.
Anand se acerca a Kasparov con el que tendrá que jugar en la penúltima ronda en partida que puede ser decisiva.
El encuentro entre Anand y Kasimdzhanov no tuvo color. Después de la fase de apertura, una Siciliana, el indio ya tenía ventaja de posición y sus piezas estaban mejor colocadas.
El ataque de Anand con todas sus piezas al baluarte enemigo no pudo ser parado por el uzbeco que tuvo que rendirse después de 38 movimientos.

Chess king Bobby Fischer may face tax evasion charges in U.S.?

American chess champion Bobby Fischer could be deported to the United States to face tax evasion charges there, a news report said Sunday.
The report by the national Mainichi newspaper could signal more trouble for Fischer as he battles a separate Japanese deportation order to the United States and tries to win free passage to Iceland.
Fischer, 61, has been held by Japanese immigration authorities since being arrested here in July while trying to board a plane to the Philippines allegedly using an invalid U.S. passport.
Washington has sought Fischer, who became world chess champion in his 1972 match in Iceland against Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union, on charges of violating international sanctions against the former Yugoslavia by playing chess there in 1992. Fischer, who wants to renounce his U.S. citizenship, has denounced the U.S. deportation order as politically motivated.
U.S. prosecutors are now building a case against Fischer for alleged tax evasion, the Mainichi said, citing an unidentified official at the U.S. bankruptcy court in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

TOKYO (AFP) - Bobby Fischer, the US chess legend turned vociferous critic of his country, is so fed up with detention in Japan that he has started to hate the Japanese nation and people, his Japanese fiancee said.
Fischer, 61, was detained in July when trying to fly out of Japan to the Philippines. The maverick genius faces 10 years in prison in the United States for playing chess in Yugoslavia in 1992 in violation of sanctions imposed over the Balkan wars.
He has been offered residency in Iceland, where he played his greatest match in 1972. But Icelandic supporters were refused access when they tried to see him this week at his immigration lock-up in central Japan.
"He has only 45 minutes to come out and to get sunshine from Monday through Friday. That's all. He starts to hate Japan and the Japanese very much," said Miyoko Watai, who became engaged to Fischer in detention and heads the Japan Chess Association.
"That's why I am so upset. But I understand why he started to hate Japanese," she told a news conference in English.

Spain defies Fide board decision, Torre shares lead in Palawan

The Spanish Chess Federation (FEDA) has challenged the World Chess Federation presidential board’s decision not to award official Fide events to Spain because of the allegedly unsatisfactory conditions at the 36th Olympiad in Calvia, Mallorca last year.
FEDA said it would raise the issue to Fide’s general assembly as it defended its record since 1998 as a host of official Fide events, including the Calvia Olympiad.
“The organizing capacity of both FEDA and other private entities that have collaborated in the management of these events has been clearly demonstrated,” the Spanish federation said in a press statement posted on the Internet.
It said FEDA had received “many praises” from participants and arbiters, as well as “from the delegations of the countries that have visited us.”
“If we take into account the general opinion of the participating delegations, the 36th Chess Olympiad, held in Calvia, has not been an exception,” FEDA stressed.

M. Fischer, âgé de 61 ans, est détenu au Japon depuis juillet, lorsqu'il avait tenté de quitter le pays muni d'un passeport américain révoqué. Islandia presiona a Japón por Fischer

Una delegación islandesa pidió hoy en Tokio la liberación del ajedrecista estadounidense Bobby Fischer, confinado en un centro de detención japonés desde hace siete meses por tratar de viajar con un pasaporte revocado.

Según sus abogados, Bobby Fischer cuenta con todas las herramientas legales para poder salir de Japón: un pasaporte nuevo otorgado por Islandia, un pasaje de avión adquirido por sus seguidores y la petición del ajedrecista de ser deportado voluntariamente.
Sin embargo, el ex campeón del mundo de ajedrez carece del visto bueno de las autoridades de inmigración niponas y sigue inmerso en una batalla legal en los tribunales de este país, donde permanece bloqueada una orden de deportación emitida por Estados Unidos.
La delegación islandesa, que hoy ofreció una rueda de prensa en el Club de Corresponsales Extranjeros de la capital japonesa, estaba encabezada por Gudmundur Thorarinsson, ex diputado y organizador de la denominada "partida del siglo" en 1972, en la que Bobby Fischer destronó al entonces rey del ajedrez, el soviético Boris Spassky.

Kasparov maintains sole lead

Garry Kasparov of Russia maintained sole lead with an eventful draw with Corus champion Peter Leko of Hungary in the eighth round of the 22nd Linares Super Grandmasters chess tournament on Thursday.
With Viswanathan Anand having his second and final bye in the event, Kasparov distanced himself a little more from the Indian ace and took his tally to 4.5 points out of a possible seven.
Bulgarian Veselin Topalov (4 points) edged himself up to sole second spot in the seven players double round-robin tournament after a hard-fought draw with Brit Michael Adams.
Anand on 3.5/6 moved to third spot in the tournament with an extra game in hand while Leko is closely following him with 3.5/7. Adams and FIDE champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan are next in line on 3/7 and local star Francisco Pons Vallejo remained at the bottom of the table despite scoring his first victory in this year's tournament, defeating Kasimdzhanov in a fine game.

El español Paco Vallejo derrota al campeón del mundo de ajedrez

El gran maestro español Paco Vallejo ha vencido, con blancas, al campeón del mundo de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE), el uzbeco Rustam Kasimdzhanov, en la octava ronda del Torneo de Linares que se disputa en esta ciudad jiennense.
Vallejo, último en la clasificación y en aparente mala forma ha sido el único que, hasta ahora, ha podido derrotar al rocoso uzbeco, que estaba dando la sorpresa al permanecer invicto en las siete primeras rondas.
La partida, que comenzó con un gambito de dama diferido, fue muy lenta desde el principio aunque el español jugó más rápido que en otras ocasiones.
Vallejo salió de la fase de apertura con un peón de más y mejor posición. No se lanzó a aventuras inútiles y fue poco a poco afianzando su posición y consiguiendo al final dos peones pasados en el ala de dama.

That’s because computer speeds have reached the point where most humans can easily be out calculated in chess, checkers or just about any other game that can be played on a chess board. But don’t give up so easily. A new game called Arimaa turns the board upside down for computers. In a recent challenge match, humans proved they can still outsmart a computer over a chess board when the world's best Arimaa-playing program was defeated 7-1 by a top-rated human player, Frank Heinemann.
The eight game series was overseen by the International Computer Games Association (ICGA -- www.icga.org), which also oversees the official Man vs. Machine chess matches. The match was co-sponsored by Highland Software (www.onbase.com), a leading developer of document management software.

Fischer Fiancee and Friend Denied Visit in Japan

TOKYO (Reuters) - Former world chess champion Bobby Fischer's fiancee and an Icelandic friend were denied access to him Thursday at the detention center outside Tokyo where he is being held while fighting deportation to the United States.
Fischer is wanted in the United States for violating sanctions against Yugoslavia by playing a chess match there in 1992. He has been in custody in Japan since he was arrested last July for traveling on an invalid U.S. passport.
An official at the immigration bureau detention center in Ushiku, northeast of Tokyo, said that no one was currently allowed to meet with Fischer for "security reasons." He would not elaborate or say how long the ban on visits would last.

Ajedrez. Torneo de Linares: Tres tristes tablas en la séptima ronda

La séptima ronda produjo, imitando el título de la novela de Cabrera Infante " Tres tristes tigres", tres tristes tablas que pusieron otra vez sobre el tablero, y nunca mejor dicho, el problema de las tablas de grandes maestros en pocas jugadas y con casi todas las piezas sobre el tablero.
Hace años que se está buscando una solución a esta pesadilla de organizadores y patrocinadores pero el problema es de difícil solución.
Los jugadores argumentan que hay posiciones muy equilibradas que no se pueden forzar, pero lo cierto es que espectadores e internautas se sienten profundamente decepcionados al ver estas partidas tan cortas entre los mejores del mundo.

Kasparov participaría de torneo unificador

03-03 | 10:53 hs. - El líder del ranking mundial reconoció que analiza formar parte del campeonato de la FIDE que disputarán los ocho mejores jugadores del mundo, por el título de campeón absoluto.
"Si vamos al grano, puedo decir lo siguiente: en cuanto la FIDE (Federación Internacional de Ajedrez) tenga todo arreglado y me haga una invitación oficial, entonces tomaré la decisión", dijo Kaspárov.
Preguntado sobre qué opina sobre la nueva iniciativa de la FIDE, aprobada el 27 de febrero pasado por su Ejecutiva, de organizar en octubre próximo ese torneo unificador, Kaspárov replicó que de momento "no hay nada que comentar", pues hay que esperar a que se concrete la propuesta.

Ajedrez: La Federación española asegura que seguirá optando a la organización de eventos

La Federación Española de Ajedrez (FEDA) afirmó hoy, en un comunicado, que "lamenta la decisión de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez" de negar a España la organización de futuros torneos, pero que, a pesar de todo, seguirá "optando a la organización de eventos oficiales de la FIDE".
El Comité Ejecutivo de la FIDE emitió, el pasado 27 de febrero, un comunicado en el que retiró su confianza a España para organizar torneos internacionales "mientras siga en su puesto el actual presidente de la FEDA, Francisco Javier Ochoa de Echagüen" alegando que "las Olimpiadas de Ajedrez celebradas en Calviá (Baleares), el pasado mes de octubre, estaban lejos de ser satisfactorias".

Anand settles for a draw against Kasparov

Linares (Spain): Viswanathan Anand went for an all out kill but had to settle for a draw as his efforts were thrawted by some brilliant defensive tactics by Garry Kasparov in the sixth round of the 22nd edition of the Linares Super Grandmasters chess tournament.
Kasparov with his effort remained atop the tables in this category-20 double round-robin tournament being played under classical time control.
While the Russian has 3.5 points in the event from his five games played so far Anand and Bulgarian Veselin Toaplov are a half point adrift on 3 points from as many games.
Fide World champion Rustam Kasimdzhanov also has 3 points but he has used up six games to achieve that and Corus Champion Peter Leko has played five games for his 2.5 points.

Entablan Kasparov y Anand en torneo de ajedrez de Linares

Madrid, 28 feb (PL) El ruso Garri Kasparov y el indio Viswanathan Anand, los dos mejores ajedrecistas del mundo, protagonizaron hoy una partida acorde a su calidad en la sexta ronda del torneo español de Linares, concluida en tablas.
La firma del pacto ocurrió tras 44 movidas de una apertura Ruy López, lo cual permitió al europeo mantener su invicto y el liderato en esa tradicional lid, que mañana tendrá la primera de sus dos jornadas de descanso.
Kasparov acumula 3,5 puntos en la cúspide, seguido con tres unidades por Anand, igual que el búlgaro Vesselin Topalov, ganador este lunes ante el español Francisco Vallejo, quien abandonó para evitar un inminente mate tras 32 jugadas de una Defensa Siciliana.
El húngaro Peter Leko y el uzbeko Rustam Kasimdzhanov batallaron durante casi seis horas y 76 movimientos, pero al final dividieron el punto, en tanto tomó un respiro el inglés Michael Adams.

Ajedrez: La FIDE retira su confianza a España para organizar torneos oficiales

La Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE) retira su confianza a España para organizar torneos oficiales mientras siga en su puesto el actual presidente de la Federación Española de Ajedrez (FEDA), Javier Ochoa de Echagüen.
El Comité Ejecutivo de la FIDE, reunido el los pasados 26 y 27 de febrero en Tiflis, emitió hoy un comunicado en el que expresa, además, que ha considerado varios informes y experiencias personales de miembros del Comité, personal de la FIDE y otros implicados.
El Comité concluyó que la preparación y las condiciones finales de la Organización y de la FEDA en las Olimpiadas de Ajedrez celebradas en Calviá (Mallorca) en octubre de 2004 estaban lejos de ser satisfactorias.

Disputarán título mundial absoluto de Ajedrez

09:54 El presidente de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE), Kirsán Ilyumzhínov, anunció que los ocho mejores ajedrecistas del mundo se disputarán en octubre el título de campeón "absoluto".
"La decisión fue adoptada ayer domingo en la capital georgiana, Tiflis, donde se celebró una reunión de la Ejecutiva de la FIDE", dijo Ilyumzhínov a la agencia Interfax en Elistá, capital de la república rusa de Kalmikia, de la que es también presidente.
Las invitaciones a ese torneo unificador se enviarán al uzbeko Rustam Kasimyánov, actual campeón mundial de la FIDE; al subcampeón, el inglés Michael Adams; al poseedor del título en la versión "Brain Games", el ruso Vladímir Kramnik; y el segundo clasificado, el húngaro Peter Leko.
Otros invitados serán los cuatro maestros más cotizados en el mundo: el ruso Gari Kaspárov, el indio Viswanathan Anand, el búlgaro Veselín Topálov y el ruso Alexander Morozévich, añadió el presidente de la FIDE. "Antes del 15 de abril próximo enviaremos contratos oficiales" a los ocho seleccionados para ese torneo, y si alguno se niega a participar, será sustituido por el siguiente ajedrecista en la clasificación, puntualizó.
