Corus chess: Anand takes sole lead

Wijk Aan Zee (The Netherlands), Jan 20: Viswanathan Anand assumed sole lead by outplaying Peter Leko in the fifth round and settled an account dating back to the previous edition of Corus Super Grandmasters chess tournament here.
The revenge also earned Anand four points and placed him in a good position to win a record fifth title at Corus, his favourite hunting ground. Last year, Leko beat Anand to gain a decisive advantage in the race for the title.
Meanwhile, his arch rival, Veselin Topalov was unable to overcome the tenacious defence of Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in an interesting fight and split the point.

Computer chess game unbeatable in 10 years

CHESS computers will be almost unbeatable in ten years' time and may bring about radical new rules for the ancient game, the world champion, Veselin Topalov, predicts.
"At the present moment I don't fear humans. Computers I think are very strong," the Bulgarian grandmaster said in an interview.
"Probably they will be better than 99.9 per cent of human beings" in a decade from now, he said.
Mr Topalov, 30, also raised the possibility that today's version of chess could give way to "Fischer Random Chess" - invented by the eccentric former champion Bobby Fischer - which sets back-row pieces randomly to narrow the importance of rehearsed openings.

Chess King Topalov with Victorious Tour Start

With the start of Corus Super Grandmasters chess tournament, eyes are fixed on the much awaited clash between World Champion Vesselin Topalov and Viswanathan Anand.
The game is set at the penultimate round of the tournament held in Dutch town of Wijk Aan Zee.
On Saturday, white-armed Topalov defeated in 25 moves Russian turned American Gata Kamsky who came back to competitive chess recently after a long hiatus.

Anand crushes Karjakin in first round

Viswanathan Anand cruised to a brilliant victory against world's youngest ever Grandmaster Sergey Karjakin of Ukraine in the first round of the Corus Super Grandmasters chess tournament in Wijk Aan Zee, on Saturday.
Anand's victory with black pieces really came in handy, as the Indian stalwart was able to match world champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria who also scored a thumping victory over Gata Kamsky of the United States.

Topalov Passes 2800 ELO Mark

Bulgarian Veselin Topalov became the third player in history to cross the magical 2800 ELO mark according to the new rating list enforced by Fide in the beginning of 2006.
Topalov thus emulated world's top rated Garry Kasparov of Russia and his compatriot Vladimir Kramnik who are the only other players in the history of chess to reach the 2800 ELO mark.
