Chess legend Kasparov to 'Post': Double-check Putin!

As Russian President Vladimir Putin spent his first full day here on Thursday, legendary chess champion Garry Kasparov had a message for Israel: Don't trust him!
In a telephone interview with The Jerusalem Post from Russia, Kasparov, who has retired from chess and is now a political rival of the president's, complained that Putin's regime is trampling on democratic principles and poses a serious threat to the rest of the world. He also said that Putin's reliance on support from ultranationalist forces could spell trouble for Russia's Jews, and he skewered Putin for strategic shortcomings that, he said, could imperil Israel.

El Magistral de León cita a la élite del ajedrez

Vishi Anand, número dos del ránking mundial, Rustam Kasimdzhanov, actual campeón del mundo y el español Alexei Shirov, cuarto del mundo, junto a la joven promesa noruega de 13 años Magnus Carlssen, se darán cita en la XVIII edición del Torneo Magistral de Ajedrez Ciudad de León.
Dicho torneo, que cuenta con un presupuesto superior a los 120.000 euros, se celebrará en el Auditorio del Edificio de la Junta de Castilla y León de la capital leonesa los días 10,11 y 12 de junio, según confirmó durante su presentación en Valladolid el presidente del comité organizador, Marcelino Sión.

Chess club says Gorbachev agrees to visit Lindsborg

LINDSBORG, Kan. - Former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev has agreed to visit Lindsborg later this year to play chess against former world champion Anatoly Karpov, who helped turn the small central Kansas community into something of a chess Mecca.
Lindsborg Mayor Ron Rolander extended a written invitation to Gorbachev through Karpov, who was in the town earlier this month to promote "Chess for Peace," a worldwide exchange program that will culminate there in 2006.
Karpov, who is a friend of Gorbachev, passed the invitation on to the former Soviet leader by telephone, which he accepted under two conditions: That Karpov is in Lindsborg when he visits, and that the two play a game of chess while he's there.

Rey del Ajedrez en Cuba, por segunda vez

Santa Clara 27 (AIN) El GM Lázaro Bruzón es feliz: con las fichas blancas y tras 74 movimientos de una defensa Semieslava retiene el título de monarca al derrotar a su más fuerte rival del Campeonato Nacional de Ajedrez, el también GM Leinier Domínguez.
No le resultó fácil al tunero mantener su reinado. El contrincante, lejos de caer en la primera partida rápida de 25 minutos, le ofreció resistencia hasta que el soberano pudo
llegar a las tablas.

¿Cómo valoras esta última jornada?

“Bien tensa, la primera ronda fue muy pareja, en la segunda hubo mayor complejidad, y alcancé ventaja desde la apertura hasta el medio juego, luego Leinier cometió algunas imprecisiones que me permitieron llegar a la victoria.
“Realmente yo estaba preparado, esta jugada la he estudiado y ejecutado tanto a la ofensiva como a la defensiva, considero que Domínguez falló porque no la usa con las negras.
“Fue muy impresionante, cualquier cosa pudo suceder, él también tenía posibilidades de ganar, el triunfo estuvo muy bien luchado, no es un rival fácil.

La Fide organise un championnat d'échecs en Argentine

La Fédération internationale des échecs (Fide) a annoncé mercredi qu'un tournoi devant désigner le «champion absolu» du monde des échecs se déroulerait en Argentine du 27 septembre au 16 octobre.
Ce tournoi, doté d'un million de dollars de prix, doit avoir lieu dans la ville de San-Luis, sur les contreforts des Andes, à 900 km à l'ouest de Buenos-Aires, a déclaré la Fide, citée par l'agence Itar-Tass.
Il opposera les huit meilleurs joueurs du monde, dont notamment le champion du monde actuel, l'Ouzbek Roustam Kasimdjanov, le vice-champion, le Britannique Michael Adams, et l'ancien champion du monde russe Garry Kasparov, toujours considéré comme le meilleur joueur du monde, a indiqué la Fide. Sasikiran, Timman share honours in Sigeman chess

Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran emerged as the joint winner after a quick draw in the final game against Jan Timman of Holland in the Sigeman and Co. chess tournament here.
Sasikiran, who was in joint lead with Timman after the penultimate round, did not take any chances with black pieces in the final round and shared the trophy with the veteran Dutch GM in this category-13 event.
The Indian came good after a few disastrous performances in the recent past that saw him dip below the 2650 mark in Elo ratings in the last list issued by FIDE.

La provincia de San Luis organizará el Campeonato Mundial de Ajedrez, entre el 27 de setiembre y 16 de octubre. Entre las sedes probables se mencionan Potrero de los Funes y La Punta, a decidirse próximamente. La confirmación de San Luis como sede del evento —que reunirá a los ocho mejores especialistas del mundo— fue dada a través de un comunicado del presidente de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE), Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. Y también llegó por el gobernador provincial, Alberto Rodríguez Saá, y el gran maestro argentino Miguel Angel Quinteros, quien está en la organización técnica.

Empate brillante en 1ra partida por el título de ajedrez de Cuba

En un vaivén de bonitas jugadas los grandes maestros Lázaro Bruzón y Leinier Domínguez hicieron tablas hoy la primera partida del match que sostienen ambos por el título cubano de ajedrez, luego de 66 lances de una Apertura Ruy López, Variante Abierta, ante un lleno completo en el Salón de Conferencias del Recinto Ferial "Expocentro", en esta ciudad de Santa Clara.
En el movimiento 19 el güinero introdujo una novedad teórica que hizo meditar las movidas siguiente a Bruzón, pero este encontró una entrega de calidad (23...T8g6) que le hubiera reportado buen contrajuego de haber sido aceptada, no obstante Leinier respondió con otra oferta de calidad (26.Txe6), y la partida se tornó hipercomplicada.

How about doping scandals in chess?

Washington: Susan Polgar felt both indignant and puzzled when she was asked to undergo urine test at an international tournament last year. She had reason to, because the tournament in question was a chess olympiad.
Polgar, a US-based grandmaster, said afterwards, "I have no idea what they were really testing for." They were of course testing for doping - in this case the one which might be resorted to for boosting brain power. So are we now entering the era of brain-stimulating or strengthening doping?

Three decades later, the fugitive ex-champion, sought by U.S. authorities for violating U.N. sanctions on Yugoslavia (in 1992 he played a high-profile rematch with Boris Spassky in Belgrade), is whisked out of a Japanese jail where he was awaiting extradition and offered shelter in Reykjavík. No one is too upset about this arrangement because he's clearly a sick man. His insane rants about Jews and America, his choice of a squalid, furtive life by a man who could have lived in princely admiration, his paranoia--he had the fillings in his teeth removed because if "somebody took a filling out and put in an electronic device, he could influence your thinking"--evoke pity and puzzlement.

Sasikiran moves into joint lead

Grandmaster Krishnan Sasikiran crashed through the defences of GM Tiger Hillarp Persson of Sweden to join Dutchman GM Jan Timman in the lead after the conclusion of the eighth and penultimate round of the Sigeman & Co. chess tournament in Copenhagen.
Top seed Hikaru Nakamura of the United States failed to break the defences of Timman on another eventful day and is now out of the race for the top spot in this category-13 event.
While both leaders are on six points apiece, Nakamura is a distant third on five points along with GM Curt Hansen of Denmark. Next in line are Danish International Master Davor Palo, GM Viorel Iordachescu of Moldova and GM Jonny Hector of Sweden with four points each.

Gana Bruzón en semifinal de Campeonato Nacional de Ajedrez

La Habana, 21 abr (AIN) Triunfo del Gran Maestro (GM) Lázaro Bruzón (LTU) y tablas de su homólogo Leinier Domínguez (LHA) matizaron hoy la primera fecha semifinal del Campeonato Nacional de Ajedrez, en la ciudad de Santa Clara.
Bruzón, campeón defensor y líder del ranking en la Isla, movió las piezas blancas y derrotó en 39 jugadas de una defensa India de Rey al también GM Walter Arencibia (HOL), quien excedió el límite de tiempo establecido.
El empate de Domínguez, en poder de las figuras oscuras, se produjo ante el Maestro Internacional (MI) Omar Almeida (CHA) luego de 20 movimientos de una defensa Eslava, cuando la posición no ofrecía ventaja para uno u otro.

Argentina acogerá Campeonato Mundial de Ajedrez de 2005

Madrid, 22 abr (PL) La ciudad argentina de San Luis será sede del Campeonato Mundial de Ajedrez del presente año, previsto del 27 de septiembre al 16 de octubre, según informó hoy la Federación Internacional del referido deporte (FIDE).
La FIDE se decidió por la ciudad argentina después de que esta ofreciera una bolsa de un millón de dólares, el cual será repartido entre los ocho ajedrecistas participantes.
Un acuerdo entre el gobernador de la provincia de San Luis y ex presidente del país, Alberto Rodríguez Saa y el titular de la FIDE, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, facilitó la entrega de la sede al país sudamericano.
En la lid, el uzbeko Rustam Kasimdzhanov defenderá el título alcanzado en Trípoli, Libia, en 2004, frente a una nómina de siete grandes maestros.

The World Chess Federation (FIDE) is pleased to announce that the World Chess Championship Tournament 2005 will take place 27 September - 16 October in the city of San Luis, Argentina under the aegis of the Province of San Luis.
The ongoing bidding procedure concerning the World Championship 2005 has been resolved in favour of the San Luis candidacy, whose negotiation team in Athens exercised the option provided in article 2.5.1 of the official regulations and offered on 15 April a prize fund of USD 1,000,000 (one million) for the event. The offer is also backed by a financial guarantee and an agreement concerning further organizing details has been signed by the Governor of San Luis, H.E. Dr Alberto Rodriguez Saa and the FIDE President H.E. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

Le dicen el Pájaro y este mote, ahora, no parece resultar caprichoso. Porque Rubén Felgaer es el ajedrecista argentino del momento y está tomando cada vez más vuelo a nivel internacional. Con 24 años, este gran maestro es el gran candidato a ser el primer argentino en superar los 2.600 puntos de ELO. Su reciente gran actuación en el torneo español de Dos Hermanas lo confirmaron como la gran sorpresa del torneo europeo. Clarín charló con este hincha de River que no para de crecer.
"Para mí, haber participado en ese torneo fue muy importante. Porque era un certamen cerrado y por invitación. Había rusos de rankings altos y que se fijaran en mí fue un orgullo", relata quien fuera campeón argentino en 2002 y vecino de Almagro, barrio al que vuelve después de cada viaje a Europa.
Felgaer tiene 2.593 puntos, según el listado de abril. Pero con esa actuación en España, donde fue segundo a medio punto del azerbayano Teymour Radjabov, ya subió a 2.610. Aunque recién en julio habrá un nuevo listado. Esa cifra podría moverse —para abajo o para arriba—, de acuerdo a sus futuras actuaciones. "A lo mejor me voy a jugar un Magistral a Brasil".

Kasparov, an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin, was not injured Friday when he was hit with the chessboard after signing it for a young man at an event in Moscow.
A spokeswoman for Kasparov, Marina Litvinovich, said the assailant told the chess champion: “I admired you as a chess player, but you gave that up for politics.”

Kasparov agressé par un fan déçu

Le numéro un mondial des échecs Garry Kasparov, qui s'est retiré définitivement, a été frappé à la tête avec un échiquier par un homme qui s'est présenté comme un admirateur déçu. L'incident s'est produit vendredi soir au cours d'une rencontre avec des jeunes militants membres de groupes d'opposition. Un jeune homme non identifié a demandé à Kasparov d'autographier un échiquier avant de s'en servir pour lui donner un coup sur la tête. "Je vous aimais en tant que joueur d'échecs, mais vous avez abandonné pour vous consacrer à la politique", aurait déclaré l'agresseur.
Garry Kasparov, qui a vivement réprimandé le jeune homme, a plaisanté à propos de cet incident. Alors qu'on lui demandait comment il se sentait, il a répondu, selon la radio Echo de Moscou: "Heureusement qu'en Union soviétique le sport populaire était le jeu d'échecs et non pas le base-ball".

MOSCÚ. El ruso Garry Kasparov, que el mes pasado abandonó el ajedrez para dedicarse a la política, fue agredido el viernes por la noche por un desconocido que le golpeó con un tablero en la cabeza.
El incidente sucedió cuando Kasparov, quien denuncia el creciente autoritarismo del régimen de Vladímir Putin, celebraba un encuentro con activistas de movimientos juveniles para estudiar la creación de un amplio frente democrático.
Al final del encuentro, un joven desconocido se acercó al campeón mundial con el pretexto de pedirle un autógrafo y, mientras éste firmaba, se colocó detrás de su espalda y le propinó un potente golpe con el tablero en la cabeza, al tiempo que gritaba insultos.

We have just learnt (on Russian radio) that Garry Kasparov was attacked after a meeting with youth activists in Moscow. He was approached by an autograph seeking participant with a chessboard. The young man circled Kasparov and delivered a sharp blow to the head with the chessboard.

(Lima) Henry Urday, presidente de la Federación de Ajedrez, y su tesorero Mario Tovar serán investigados por los delitos de tráfico ilícito de personas y peculado por manejos dudosos de dinero, así lo ordenó el Consejo de Ministros.
Para la oficina de Control Interno del Instituto Peruano del Deporte, tanto Urday como su tesorero son culpables por los delitos de tráfico de personas y malos manejos de dineros, por lo que recomendó a la Presidencia del Consejo de Ministros que autorice a la Procuraduría Pública iniciar acciones judiciales contra ambos.

The games drew about 15 chess enthusiasts to a windowless conference room at City College in Harlem, where pawns and rooks were moved with such intensity of purpose that the scene could have passed for yet another high-stakes tournament.
The grandmaster and bona fide chess luminary Maurice Ashley was there, calling out commentary as he often does when championship matches are broadcast around the world. He is known to use lines like, "Pawns are attacking mercilessly!" and "The bishop is slicing and dicing!"
But what Mr. Ashley had to say about chess on this night was more academic. Literally. "A lot of times in education we try to teach kids the one right answer and that leads, in my opinion, to robotic thinking," he told the players, encouraging them to think of multiple possible moves before choosing the best play. "Real life isn't like that. Is there ever one right answer? Generating alternatives for the sake of alternatives is a good thing."

Anand wins fourth Chess Oscar

He won two in a row, in 1997 and 1998. Now Indian Super-GM Vishy Anand has done it again, winning the Oscar for 2004 Chess Oscar after clinching it for 2003. The worldwide poll involving leading chess writers, critics and journalists from 75 countries, and conducted by Russian magazine 64, gave Anand 5205 points for victory.

El granmense hizo uso de su favorita Najdorf y se impuso tras 41 jugadas, en partida muy seguida por el público presente en la sala, pues el GM estuvo en problemas, y logró salvar la posición mostrando sangre fría.

Checkmate! A Chess Master Makes Moves in NY Premiere of Suspense-Thriller 'Fit to Kill'

Fit to Kill, Victor L. Cahn's new suspense-thriller about a chess master and his successful wife, begins previews April 9 at Off-Broadway's Harold Clurman Theatre in the Theatre Row complex. Opening is April 11.
Broadway's Jana Robbins (The Tale of the Allergist's Wife) stars in what's billed as a witty and elegant play in the tradition of Sleuth and Deathtrap.
Rachel Reiner Productions presents the New York premiere staging, directed by Eric Parness. Performances continue to April 30.
Playwight Cahn penned Roses in December, which starred James and Keira Naughton Off-Broadway. The new drama "is a suspense-thriller about strategy, deception, and betrayal," according to production notes. "Adrian, a charming but self-indulgent chess master, lives a life of luxury thanks to his marriage to Janice, an older but sexy and vibrant woman, who has made her fortune as the CEO of an exercise empire. When Amy, a young reporter with an agenda of her own, starts asking too many questions, a whirlwind of deadly schemes ensue, leading to a series of twists and surprises that will keep audiences guessing until the final seconds."
Susan Polgar, a four-time World Chess Champion, five-time Olympic Champion and the first woman in history to break the gender barrier in chess, is chess consultant for the new play.

KASPAROV OUTLINES NEW PARTY'S STRATEGY

MOSCOW, April 11. (RIA Novosti)-Ex-world chess champion Garry Kasparov, the head of the opposition Committee-2008: Free Elections, recently arrived in St. Petersburg to start creating his own political party. Yesterday, he held his first meeting with a broad range of potential allies from the ranks of the democratic public, mainly representatives of Yabloko and Irina Khakamada's Our Choice, Kommersant writes.

"There is no point working to secure 10-12% of the seats in the next State Duma, we need 40%," Kasparov said. He said as many political forces as possible had to be involved. "There is a political stalemate between the radical right and the radical left," he said. "Our chance of winning is to embrace everyone, up to Glazyev [Sergei Glazyev, the leader of the movement For a Worthy Life]."

Anand Keeps His Game Sharp, Even With Little Time to Think

The 14th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament, at the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in Monaco from March 19 to 31, was won by Viswanathan Anand of India. Anand scored 8-3 in the games without sight of the chessboard and 7½ with the board in view.
Anand wins tournament after tournament in this format. His only rival in rapid play was Garry Kasparov, who has retired from competition.
"Blindfold" is the old-fashioned word. Nowadays, with computers, the players make their moves on separate boards, and the moves each makes immediately disappear, except on demonstration boards for the spectators and referees.

Over the past month, this column has been dominated by Linares, the news of Gary Kasparov's retirement from 'professional chess' and then the Amber tournament in Monaco, leaving a number of other events unreported. Firstly, though, I should apologise for the incorrect scores from Monaco published last week. I picked these up from the website without realising that they didn't incorporate the final three rapid-play games. Much the most salient point is that while Viswanathan Anand was indeed first on 15.5/22, Alexander Morozevich was second by himself on 13 - a very fine result.
Bobby Fischer's release from Japan following his acquisition of Icelandic citizenship has been discussed at length in the news pages. He left Japan on 24 March and flew to Copenhagen then transferring to a private jet in Malmo (across the bridge in Sweden) so as to fly to Reykjavik airport, rather than Keflavik which is on the NATO base.

Sofia, Bulgaria, stages a truly innovatory tournament on May 11-22. The double-round elite all-play-all will forbid draws by mutual agreement. Shared points will be allowed only in totally drawn positions and must be approved by the arbiters advised by a strong grandmaster.
The six competing GMs include Vishy Anand and Veselin Topalov, who top the latest rankings after Garry Kasparov's retirement, and the classical champion Vlad Kramnik. The new rule has already claimed its first victim. Hungary's Peter Leko drew all 12 games tepidly in Linares and has been replaced by the England No1 Michael Adams.
Can Sofia avoid the fate of the 1962 Olympiad, also played in Bulgaria and the last serious attempt to stop quick draws? Varna had a 30-move rule, which peace specialists soon learnt to dodge by a mutual head nod, the French or Slav Exchange and rapid piece hoovering.

Outrage in Russia as Spassky puts name to rabidly anti-Semitic petition

Boris Spassky, the former chess world champion, has caused uproar in Russia by signing a petition that demands the country's state prosecutor bans a number of Jewish organisations.
Spassky was among 5,000 Russians who put their name to a letter calling for a ban on all religious and national groups acting on the principles of the Shulchan Aruch, a repository of Jewish law originally written in the 1560s.
The "Letter of 5,000", sent three weeks ago, branded Judaism "anti-Christian and inhumane" and accused believers of "committing ritual murders".

Radjabov empató hoy en la 9na y última ronda con el ruso Oleg Korneev, en 33 lances de una Variante Sveshnikov de la Defensa Siciliana, y sacó medio punto a un cuarteto de jugadores integrado por los rusos Alexey Dreev y Alexander Rustemov, el georgiano Zurab Azmaiparashvili y el argentino Rubén Felgaer.
